Yes, the dreaded ice cream headache, also known as “brain freeze”!
If you eat/drink something really cold really quickly, the nerve centre at the roof of your mouth responds in such a way that it dilates the blood vessels from the roof of the mouth to the head, resulting in intense pain that, fortunately, lasts only about 30 seconds.
So all you starvations out there, eat your ice cream, popsicles etc slowly and keep em away from the roof of your mouth. Enjaay and thank me later!
Mirch, because it isn’t such a serious issue, scientists are obviously not spending as much time researching it. They’d rather research cancer than the ice cream headache! The pain lasts only a few seconds, it has been experienced by a lot of people and it does appear in the International Classification of Headache Disorders.
This image taken from wikipedia would help you understand it better:
When the blood vessels dilate, it is this nerve (in yellow) that sends the signal to the brain which then interprets it as a headache. You can see this nerve extending out to the nose as well, so you can experience “brain freeze” even if you inhale something really cold.
Since when Wikipedia is considered an authentic source of information ? If an article in Wikepedia has authentic reference then I would take it otherwise I would move on.
The British Medical Journal published a study in Canada which found that kids who ate ice cream too fast were more likely to get brain freeze.
A survey in Taiwan found 40.6% of 8359 people experienced the ice cream headache and migraine patients had a higher frequency of this condition. Similar reports were published by City of London Migraine Clinic (bird, et al). And there are other papers from Ruskin NH. , Harries M. , Hulihan J. etc
