~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

We have many random threads on Hair Dyeing here but no one compiled one where everyone could ask whatever they want to know.

My question:
This is the original colour of my hair. I like it but I am looking for a change, not a drastic one but a shade or two lighter than this original one.

Texture of hair:
Wavy (here they have been partly straightened)

Colour:
Dark Brown

**
Please recommend exact shades & brand name whose hair dye would look good & is a shade or 2 lighter than my original colour**?

Have you considered highlights instead of all over dye? I think it would look really nice and natural and it would be a change but not a drastic one.

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

I am not interested in getting highlights, not even low lights unless they are too good a type to go for ..

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

I wouldn't go for a full hair dye because your hair is very dark. I made the mistake of dying my hair few times and the color didn't show up at all and dried my hair horribly! I tried Mehndi color highlights and those turned out really well for me..

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

Agreed. And when full hair dye starts growing out it looks REALLY bad. Highlights in the baylayage technigque (no foils - the highlights are hand painted on) look natural and give the hair a sunkissed look and when it grows out it looks like ombre hair but not in a bad way - Kinda like Mila Kunis's highlights.

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

you could go for an asian hair dye made specifically for very dark asian hair. Palty and pretteria and well known brands and they have such pretty colors that WILL lighten your hair. you can google it.

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

I think the same that you already hav brown hairs. dark color will not show up and if you want to go for light hair color then first you have to go through the cut down stage then hair dying.

P.S light colored hairs are no more IN.

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

duno abt u but i like burgundy, violets, reds, chest-net and would go with any of these. these look gr8 on dark hair. u can go caramel if u wanna go lighter. and go for full hair. don't care wat ppl say. i kept getting highlights for years coz of such advices and then finally died my whole hair myself and i like full hair way better than highlights. u need touch ups and u can easily do that at home but if u get highlights get a lot and thick locks done. that way it looks more pretty rather than few strands..

Okay since you’ve mentioned Mila Kuni’s highlights, I love her hair in this picture:
Hair Colour

I’d like to get this. Suggestions? Which ones? how? brand names? codes? colour shades? type of lights?

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

i like her hair color ^

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

I love all over color. I find it to be much more…natural than highlights.

I lightened my hair a couple of years ago because I do all over color quite a bit and that red-brown color is just a part of my personality now…lol.

This is my hair now:

I know that Garnier makes a few colors meant for darker hair so it can be lightened easily.

The other option is just to keep dying until you see the shade come up.

I don’t like mehndi because it takes forever to grow out and you can’t dye over it.

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

What about the one I posted, any idea how to get that one? Maybe I could keep the top layer as my original hair colour, and shade the lower bits like Mila Kunis'?

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

Mila has highlights that have been blended very well into her natural dark brown color. Its a dark caramel color and a full head...not a partial. The reason it looks so natural is because the color has been kept very close to her own color and close to the root. From a certain angle, it might even look like an all over color.

As long as you stay close to your own color, it won't be hard to create that pretty dimension you see in her hair.

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

If you just do lower bits...it would be a low light.

Lots of people are still doing them.

Are you thinking of doing this look for your wedding?

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

Yup - I am liking it. But I am unsure of what colours would be closest to my own hair tone.

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

Is going to a professional an option? I don’t think you’ll get the depth and highlights with a box colour.

Here’s my hair:

My stylist hand painted bleach in to lift off colour (my hair was previously dyed) and it also leans more red just because my natural hair colour leans red as well. I don’t know if this helps. Oh I also had her start the highlights below my roots because I wanted the grown out/ombre look.

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

Yup professional is the option, which is why i want to keep shade in mind already

Re: ~ The Hair Dyeing Thread

Take the pic of Mila Kunis in. I took a bunch of celeb pics in and then discussed with my stylist.
