Re: The Grindhouse
Both Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino absolutely deliver in this film. The films were pure entertainment from the action to the dialogue. The over the top scenarios, the extremely unbelievable action, the cliche'd dialogue that you know you've heard before, it was all there. And it was all excellent. But the great thing about this film isn't the films themselves. As enjoyable as they were, these films just aren't as effective by themselves. Sure you can still watch it and be entertained, but you'd be missing the essence of what Quentin and Robert want you to experience. These films were meant to be watched together, back to back. It's the experience of being in a "grindhouse" cinema that makes it work so well. RR and QT did a great thing with this film...they gave grindhouse to all of those who had never experienced it before. And they made it fun.
Rodriguez' and Tarantino make exploitation their craft. The women in skimpy outfits. The closup shots of breasts, ass, etc. The constant sexual double-entendre ("I told you I never miss"), lesbian characters, even hints at incestual sex (Machete trailer, the BabySitter Twins). It's all there. And it's great. They do exactly what they set out to do, and you don't miss it. It's made crystal clear for you. And even throughout all that, they still give you an entertaining joyride of a film.
Also make sure you don't miss the both director's always present "hints" to previous films (Red Apple Cigarettes, Big Kahuna Burger, "Foot Massage", Son #1 and Son #2).
Just pure entertainment all the way through.

Re: The Grindhouse
Planet Terror was excellent. But I had a big problem with Death Proof.
By the way, if you need to take a break during this 3 hour plus movie go when the second set of girls are having breakfast. That is the most boring conversation I have ever had to sit through, and I'm always surrounded by women. I almost left the movie because I was so bored.
Another irritating thing was Tarantino's cameos in both films. He's undoubtedly the worst actor in all of his movies.
On the plus side, the first half of Death Proof was great and very entertaining.
Re: The Grindhouse
I actually came out of the movie completely undecided. I was definitely entertained but I think it took me a while to absorb it, a 3.5hr high-octane marathon is not something you can comment on right away :).
Overall I really enjoyed it, I think I enjoyed Planet Terror more, there were moments in Death-Proof where I felt "What the heck is the point in all this???", there was character development and lots of conversations that basically led to absolutely nothing.
Tarantino does need to stay off the screen, as a director he's great but an actor? Nope.

True. Despite the extensive character development I really disliked the second batch of girls. I was actually rooting for stuntman Mike. On the other hand I liked the first batch so their incident was bittersweet.
