Al-Numan ibn Thabit al-Taymi, al-Imam Abu Hanifa (d. 150), called “The Imam” by Abu Dawud, and “The Imam, one of those who have reached the sky” by Ibn Hajar, he is known in the Islamic world as “The Greatest Imam” (al-imâm al-azam) and his school has the largest number of followers among the four schools of Ahl al-Sunna. He is the first of the four mujtahid imams and the only Successor (tâbii) among them, having seen the Companions Anas ibn Malik, Abd Allah ibn Abi Awfa, Sahl ibn Sad al-Saidi, Abu al-Tufayl, and `Amir ibn Wathila.

brother, we shouldn't indulge in greatest this and greatest that, it will lead to leg pulling again. Lets just say that he was one great scholar and move on without pulling others down.

bro, if you read the article you wouldn't of replied like this. nobody is greater than Allah. that is what I know. I am not even trying to say that Abu Hanifa was the greatest Imam, I am just posting this because it is very informative. :)

err, I am not even going to take into that context, rather strictly even on "Imam" level we shouldn't claim as "greatest". I just wanted to let you know. I will read the article later.

You will find out why the author uses the word "greatest" by reading the article and understanding the context. :)

anyways, I didn't create this thread for a debate, if it does become one, I will not be part of it.

Imam literally means 'Leader' and the greatest of all leaders was the Prophet Muhammad (sas).

Please dont go around distributing the status Allah reserved for this Beloved to other people.

I am not saying anything about Prophet Muhammad is the greatest Imam.

But again, just read the article.. the author is not bashing anybody or elevating someone's status above other important people. Just praising a well known scholar that's all.

I don't get why people get so irritative.
