The Greatest - 200 Pop Culture Icons

This program was telecast back in the thrid week of July on VH1. Did anyone watch it? I missed it but my friends were good enough to record this program for me. So, I watched it last night and was delightful to see Oprah Winfrey to be at # 1. The woman has set examples for generations to come. I have always liked watching her show whenever I get time. She seems to have knowledge in every aspect of life.

The last or top 10 icons are my fav too, except Superman & Lucille Ball!

  1. Michael Jackson

  2. Princess Diana

  3. Michael Jordan

  4. Madonna

  5. Marilyn Monroe

  6. Tom Cruise

  7. Lucille Ball

  8. Elvis Presley - The KING

  9. Superman

1. OPRAH WINFREY

I saw bits and pieces of it. It was too long to sit there and watch. I'm very surprised Madonna was not in the top 5 and that Tom Cruise was ahead of her!

Yeah it was too long. :p That's good enough reason for me to skipped the program, watched the record one.

Mehnaz, I think these icons ratings have been polled mostly by women and truth be told, Tom Cruise is womens' first choice if they ask to marry Celebrity. Also, you need to look at Tom Cruise's figure/shape. He looks as good today as he was in Top Gun. :)

Oprah :k: She is awesome and definetly deserves to be at #1.

Tom Cruise has a very cocky and arrogant grin. It's the "I know I'm so hot" smile. After seeing him do that look at the beginning of Vanilla Sky, I was glad that his character was made to suffer the way he did!

He's a good actor though. :)

Oprah
holy…

Who cares about this list. It was a list about American pop culture icons. And Oprah was #1. Give me a break. I have lived in the USA now for more than 12 years and never have I found her program worth to be the #1 ranking. Just another daytime talk show without the action. At least they could have given the #1 ranking to somebody with talent such as a singer or athelete.

were there any specific criteria(s) used to rank these icons? :~)

Can't believe that ben affleck and his likes are even in the list.
that's how u can tell that this list is messed up.
Elvis Presley should have been #1, no doubt

Yes!
What makes an “Icon?” It’s not enough to just be famous or have won a couple of awards. You have to pass one or more of the following criteria:

[li] Do they pass the one-name test?
[/li][li]Can you dress up as them for Halloween?
[/li][li]Did they blaze a trail in pop culture?
[/li][li]Did they create a signature character in pop culture?
[/li][li] Can you quote them (or their character) in 10 seconds or less? (Do they have a catch phrase?)
[/li][li] Did society imitate their sense of fashion? Hairstyle?
[/li][li] Did “SNL” create a sketch satirizing them?
[/li][li] Did someone write a song about them?
[/li][li] Was or is there merchandising/paraphernalia that bears their image?
[/li][li] Can they be connected to Kevin Bacon?
[/li]
xguru: You have lived 12 years in the USA, you don’t care about the list but you were good enough to reply on this thread. Fair enough.

MehnazQ: Tom has a right to be Cocky. :hehe: Damn, if I were Tom Cruise, I would be in the same shoes.

Clint Eastwood at 90? puhlease and I can’t believe Jerry Springer didn’t make the list.:disgust:

The Game Responds:

*He was freakin' awesome in "Magnolia" where he used that grin to the fullest. And I think Seinfeld should have been in the top ten, but oh well. People, That Is All.*

True, Oprah is OK, but the Simpsons should have definitly topped the charts.

 god bless you O’ great entity.

the list kinda lost me since it has bowie, marley, tupac and jim morrison so low on the list. I think some of it does not make sense. glad i dinn wate the time to watch the show.

PT homez, you like Oprah Winfrey? And have time to watch her show. I dont remember when I las saw her show, but I know its sometime in the afternoon when most people with bills are at work :D

Spot on, Triple H!

Tom Cruise was damn good in Magnolia. MehnazQ if you haven't watch Magnolia, then you should! It's a movie about lives of dying Cruise's father, a police officer in love, a young wife etc in a single day. It's about three hours long and features big cast including Julianne Moore.

Hey Game, do you know what it actually meant by the Rain of the Frogs? I still don't get that part of the movie. Maybe that's the reason I never really got into the movie. {You can answer this question via PM. I don't wanna spoil movie for anyone :)} The acting was awesome by everyone but to me the ending seems to be thrown away. Oh BTW, I'm with you on Seinfeld...It should be in the Top 10.

Pir Sahib: I know, Man. The list seems to be kinda complicated. It is so because of the criteria by which Pop Icons have been ranked. I'm still amazed the list doesn't have Beattles' name in the Top 10. Anyway, you be glad that a Chicago woman tops the chart. ;)

5Abi: Homie, :D Without a shadow of doubt I like Oprah but I don't watch the show regularly. Whenever I get the time, I do.

I was never into Oprah show but shortly after 9/11, I saw the program about Islam by Oprah Show, which made me think that there are Americans out there who want to know about Islam from Muslims than browsing CNN website and watching Fox TV.

In that show, the guests were Mr. Ahmad, a Pakistani Islamic Scholar, former Ambassodor of Pakistan to U.S, Maleeha Lodhi, Queen Rania of Jordan etc etc.. It was a good show about Islam, probably, the best followed the documentry about Islam on PBS. If you want the video of it, then order now from her website oprah.com. Also, RAWA, an organziation for helping women in Afghanistan gets support from Oprah, too.

I think the reason Oprah Winfrey is famous because she always gotta topic to talk about. Be it social problems, health care, Showbiz, Love, Life, Relationship, Marriage, Food...you name it. Her program will give you full insight. She's a leader when comes to argument. :) I heard about Oprah Show will be taken off in 2006. I hope it won't happen. She did close her Book Club feature of the program, which is now back. Hopefully, she won't go off the air.

p.s. Tha Doggfather is ranked 92.

Homez, I was asking bout Tha Doggfather a.k.a Snoop Doggy Dogg, fo' shizzle. I know Al Pacino is up there already.

The very type of arrogant character he was potraying in the first half of the movie! A true testament to the actor's abilities.

surprising to see Shania Twain above Whitney Hoston and Jimi Hedrix, and Reese Witherspoon and Ben Affleck even in the list!
