The gift that keeps giving...

Hey all,

So i’m getting married, and I’m about to register for gifts…and I would like you all to tell me anything and everything, that I would need in my house…

What are somethings you can’t live without?

What are some amazing household inventions that will make my life easier?

If you could get something for your house…what would it be???

PLEASE…HELP A SISTER OUT!!!

Re: The gift that keeps giving…

if by any means your a baker or make roti/paratah, (basically things that require mixing flour or dough) you need a KitchenAid Mixer: you will never be doing it by hand again! no more kneading dough for roti! best thing ever

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

It depends on your lifestyle. Will you be living in a joint family or starting a new household altogether.

If it is a new house/apt then the ist is endless(offcourse, essentials will be on top)

Please explain your situation and then ppl here can help you out. Lusi postyed a list of essentials for kitchen but you may need stuff for the rest of the house too, like linens, bathroom sets, curtain/drapes, cushions, other small applianes like iron/iron stand, vaccum cleaner etc.

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

For my weddind(which was small intimate ceremony, mostly family and close friends, so everyone asked me what I wanted, I have 10 mamoon and khalas :) and six chachas) ppl gave me gift certificates of the stores of my choice (in canada, I got for home sense, bay, home depot, canadain tires) so i got pretty much everything I needed using those GC.

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

We will be living on our own, in our new house inshallah....and so basically we don't have anything....i'm also heading to Pakistan...is there some household items that I should get from there that are worthwhile?

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

^ A good tawa, bailan and chakla from Pakistan

A good pot set - non-stick
Nice canister sets - you will need these for all of your spices, daals, etc
Blender
Toaster/toaster oven
Linens
Vaccum
Towel sets
Dish sets
Closet organizers
A good iron
Serveware
Flatware
Glasses

Ill add more as I think of it

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

THanks Reha, but what's a bailan and chakla?

and yes please do keep adding!! I would have never thought of the closet organizer!!!

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

bailan- rolling pin
chakla-the board you roll the roti on

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

Guac said it ^ The best tawa, rolling pin and chakla Ive used are the ones my grandma brought us from Pak years ago.

Again, this is IF you make roti or parathay frequently enough to need them.

Lamps
Rugs
End tables
House phones - a few good cordless handsets if you are going to have a landline
Hampers
Shower caddy
Bathroom accessories

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

oh ok that makes sense...and yea I will be making roti quite often..so I will def. get those things from Pak...thanks!!!

I'm making a list...and its getting long lol :)

I was thinking about decoration peices for the house...like vases and mirrors as well!!

Lusi...that's a great idea to have jars for the lentils etc...as well as jars for the spices...are there special jars...or any jar will do? (yes im that lost)

Re: The gift that keeps giving…

Ive heard drapes in Pakistan are better than what we have here in the US (dont knw where you are). You can look into that.

Full length mirror - you need to have at least one.
Coffee table items (books, show pieces, etc)
Tea sets in Pakistan are beautiful
Coffee maker - if you’re a coffee person
Wall clocks
Art work

For decor…you should look at your color scheme/house/apartment and go accordingly. Im a little weird and change my decor according to the seasons.

Recently, I was at a friend’s house and noticed she had a looooooooooooooooooooooong cushion (on the floor) running all along her walls. It was a cushion set outlining her entire basement. It was meant for people to sit on and looked oh so gorgeous even though it was a very simple set! Think of a sofa with no legs. Of course, I asked her where she got it from and the answer was: ta-da! Pakistan. :naraz: Just an idea if you want to do that in your starter home instead of buying expensive furniture.

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

That is such an awesome idea for the cushion set!!! too bad our basement isn't done lol...but I will look into that!
I totally forgot about the teasets...my mom got the most BEAUTIFUL teaset from there..that is definelty going on the list for Pakistan...hopefully i can back it back without breaking!!

lol that's cute that you change it up...and i think you should....same old same old gets boring!

Re: The gift that keeps giving...

drapes/curtains def from pakistan so think of a color scheme you would like to look at for at least 2/3 years to come(even longer)
and you could also get cushion covers to match or co ordinate
linens from pakistan are quite good too
towels I prefer from west...and most kitchen essientials from west..
rolling pin and board def from pak.most desi men love parathay rotis even if they ve never been to pak...:)

dont buy or receive too much too soon as you will need different things as you get used to your new environment and everyone has different needs,so gift certificates or cash are definately a good idea.....

I never thought I would say cash..as I used to think it to be tacky..amazing how one changes with age/experience...:)
