Thats not Gmail feature, its** firefox**… the “ghumen” is standard for many applications on the internet these days (works great with ajax), including vbulletin software that GS uses.

ki ho gya hai tussi lokka NooN, that ghumen is just a moving dot animation circle. Usually when you send data to the database by doing a quick reply or making a thread, then the "time" it takes from your end to the server to store your data, that time process can be few miliseconds to few seconds depending how fast the server is and how well it is optimized and other various factors.
Now that ghumen has a psychological effect...and instead of just seeing a "dot" or a simple msg saying "please wait" that moving circle lets you think that there is happening something, and all of sudden the post is there! Wupseee.
It has nothing to do with Ajax , if it was Ajax, then it would have posted the reply to the thread (fx via quick reply) *without geting the thread to "REFRESH" *like some AJAX based comments system on several content management systems like JOOMLA.
VB will have that feature very soon.
