An analysis conducted just days after the earthquake struck found that the temblor accelerated Earth’s spin, shortening the length of the 24-hour day by 1.8 microseconds. A microsecond is a millionth of a second.
The planet’s rotation sped up because the earthquake shifted the distribution of Earth’s mass, said geophysicist Richard Gross at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who made the calculation.
The scenario is similar to that of a figure skater drawing her arms inward during a spin to turn faster on the ice. The closer the mass shift during an earthquake is to the equator, the more it will speed up the spinning Earth.
****therefore extrapolating from this fact we will have shortened the 1000 yr time period by 7.3 seconds!
The question I have is does this affect time as we know it?
in other words if the Earth day is shortened to say 23 hrs then how will our lives change?****
Re: The Fukushima Earth Quake speeds up Earth rotation by 1.8 microseconds per day!
:ROTFL: You have too much time at your hand.
All this reminds me of a column by Ibne Insha names sooraj ka dubba goal ho gia.
I will share if I can find it on the internet.
for a moment, you know I thought the same thing, but then, ain't it better not to waste your time spreading wrong materials/ rumors to people and misleading them than putting your efforts and time, searching for the right thing so you save a lot of people from being mislead.
Re: The Fukushima Earth Quake speeds up Earth rotation by 1.8 microseconds per day!
It's not shortening your day by 7.3 seconds it's shortening your millenium by 7.3 seconds.
Besides I did the calculation and it baffles me ...
I keep getting 31.6 seconds shorter ... (per thousand years)
SindSagar bro ... can you please show you calculation?
actually after running the numbers again I get a different result:
365 days X 1000 yrs = 365000 days
and the day is shortened by 1.8 / 1000000 second
if we multiply 365000 X 1.8/1000000 = 0.657 second does not make that much difference but in another thousand years we would have experienced 657 second shortage.
however our life is dependent not on seconds but days and the sleep / awake cycle that comes with a day & night.
so we will not hardly miss the speeding up of the earth's revolutions.
Re: The Fukushima Earth Quake speeds up Earth rotation by 1.8 microseconds per day!
The article a bit confusing. Does t not explain how more mas moved towards center of earth. Talks abt glaciers in Antarctica melting and moving from inside of continent outward. If that happened it should have slowed the spin.
good pt by ex science champ. Did 5 think abt polar ice cap melting and redistributing mass away from center.
