The Feeding Thread

How did you feed your babies and for how long?

  • exclusively breastfed?
  • breastfed with 1-2 topups of formula a day?
  • formula milk exclusively?

When did you start solids?

Re: The Feeding Thread

No. 2 with both of them. Probably more than 1-2 topups of formula a day. BFed first one for almost 8 month but only during night from 6 months onwards.

Proper solids were started around 3,5 months I think but from 2 months on I let him taste whatever I was having. I didn't find anything wrong with it. I think it'll be the same with baby 2.

The Feeding Thread

Exclusively breastfed my eldest for 14 months, he never took a bottle, weaned straight to a sippy cup after his first birthday. I started introducing solids around 4 months. Rice cereal was first...then pureed veggies and fruits...

With my twins, I exclusively bf'd them 6 months...but would pump and use a bottle for a couple of feeds a day so that someone could help me feed them. Since the were preemies, I needed to add a tiny bit of high caloric formula especially for preemies to my breast milk. At the 6 month mark, I couldn't handle the nursing anymore so I transitioned them to formula only. They started on solids the same way as my eldest.

The Feeding Thread

I Breastfeed him with 1 formula top up at night. Also, breastfeeding is a mix of direct and expressed pumped milk in bottle. He is 3.5 months old .. Not sure when to start solids.

Re: The Feeding Thread

^ these days docs say to start around 6 months. still milk is the most important thing for him during his first year. solids are just a bonus, even after 6 months.

what does your pediatrician recommend?

Re: The Feeding Thread

i was not able to breast feed hardly did for one month, then formula, after 1 year moved her to fresh milk.I started solids at 4 months, I started wth apple puree.

Re: The Feeding Thread

I started solids with fruit puree as well. It’s not what they recommend but he seemed very fond of apples and bananas so that’s what it was. He’s still crazy about apples and bananas. :cb:

Re: The Feeding Thread

^ same here my daughter loves apple n pear n strawberries but no banana she gets constipated

Re: The Feeding Thread

Breastfed my girl (no top feed at all) for 10 months. Introduced solids at 5 months. Rice cereal and banana bring her first solid food.

Re: The Feeding Thread

Son- exclusively breast fed with a formula topup at night before bed. Started semi solids (purée food) 5.5 months. Then solids at around 7 months.

Daughter- exclusively formula fed but had two breast feeds one before bed and one first thing in d morning. Also weaned her just over 5 months.

Re: The Feeding Thread

If he is content with the amount of feeds then carry on as normal, if he's not gaining enough weight or you've been advised by your midwife for any reason to wean earlier.. You can start at just over 4 months.

Re: The Feeding Thread

Breastfed number one for 2 years, till about 4 months he got some formula too, then he stopped that, some solids at 5 months and sippy cup at 6 months. Whole milk at one year but he never liked it till I weaned him off breast milk at 2 years.

Re: The Feeding Thread

I exclusively breastfed for 8 months and then started to add formula. And I exclusively pumped so we was always on a bottle. He is 2.5 half and still on a bottle and I am afraid that if we took away the bottle he won't drink as much milk so I am going to keep the bottle for as long as I can (he starts daycare in few months and I am pretty sure they will stop it.)

We tried to give him solids at 6 months but he wouldn't eat. He never ate baby word and at 1 year old we started to give him solids likes mushy palo and other rice mix with daal or veggies.

Re: The Feeding Thread

You can start tasting around 4 months, however, kids are more interested in solids at/around 6 months. Just make sure your child is getting the required amount of milk for his/her age.
I gave him avacado as first food, he loved it and it is very healthy for babies. For almost 2 months, I gave him veggie mash (combination of various veggies with a little seasoning) and daals. Around 8 months, I started adding meat and it was more textured. Around 10 months, he was eating whatever we were. However, I made sure he was getting his required amount of milk (24-30oz). We had phases where he refused solids, I was told by the doctors that it is very normal. Now at 18 months, he takes milk 3 times a day and has 2 proper meals. Alhamdulilah.

Re: The Feeding Thread

Im still bFeeding my child but usually at night. she dont like taking feeder. so she shifted to solid from 3 months. Trying her wd formula milk, she refuses , most of the time :(

Re: The Feeding Thread

Exclusively breastfed my kids for 6 months. Hoping to do it longer with the next baby.
My first baby started solids at 4 months and my 2nd baby started around 6 months.

Re: The Feeding Thread

Your baby needs milk throughout the day and just not night.

Re: The Feeding Thread

When you say that kids were eating the same thing as you do, does that mean they eat spicy food (if you do that is) like you do as well?

Re: The Feeding Thread

We don't eat spicy so it was never an issue. When stated eating table food, we became more cautious of the spice in the food.

Re: The Feeding Thread

Breastfed my baby for 12months…no.formula or bottle.
(I had to eat like a cow to complete all his nutritional.needs)

Transitioned him to cow’s milk with sippy cup at 12 month.mark.

Started solids at six months with avocado n then other fruits..veggies grains and daal…
