The Fast Food Debate!

So if you’ve got Facebook, you’ve probably seen articles on fast food chains and how they’re sooo unhealthy.

McDonald’s with their chicken nuggets made up of chicken parts that aren’t really considered meat and whatnot would be an example.

I was discussing this with a friend of mine a few days ago and he made an interesting point:

He said people who live in the West don’t understand how a lot of these cheaper and low quality options keep people who cannot afford better food…fed. He argued that people like me are the reason why one day even chains like McD’s will become too expensive for working class people. We keep suing their pants off and their prices keep going up.

My perspective was that its not a chicken nugget for real…its not even real meat. Its bad for you, unhealthy but the general public doesn’t know that and consumes it thinking its fine. It should not be on their menu because its horrible for you!

Your take?

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

Personally, I find it rather absurd when people sue McDonald’s and attempt to place the blame on them for their own unhealthy habits. Not only are they willingly choosing to eat at McDonald’s despite knowing that it’s unhealthy, but their health problems are usually not the result of McDonald’s food alone. In addition to years of eating fast food, there is often a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of exercise involved as well. As far as healthy food being expensive, I’ve found that’s not always the case. In fact, in some cases, the rubbish food is equally as or more expensive than the healthy food.

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

I agree that in some situations people’s food choices are quite limited. However, fast food alone isn’t responsible for all of the health issues faced by obese or overweight individuals. It’s usually a combination of an unhealthy diet (fast food) AND a lack of exercise. Exercise doesn’t necessarily require an expensive gym membership. You can walk, jog, or follow exercise videos (with many available for free on YouTube) at home free of cost.

^ Very true - where there is a will, there is a way

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

that is only the tip of the iceberg. how can a lb of chicken breast be cheaper than a lb of cabbage? stop the farm subsidies, and let the free market do its job.

The Fast Food Debate!

Do you guys remember a few years back when Jamie Oliver tried to revolutionize the school lunch programs here in the US…bichara…he was tarred and feathered all the way back across the pond

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

It may be cheap but the consumer has to pay a big price later.

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

What rubbish!

I’m sure buying crap from McDonald everyday is way more expensive than buying week supply of vegetables and other staple food from the Supermarket. A lame excuse for being lazy and uncreative.

In the age of low wage and seriously poor working conditions, the past generation got on fine with life and didn’t die as a result of starvation because there were no junk food factories selling burgers for a quid.

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

Completely agree. I’m not certain where people get this idea that rubbish food is “cheaper.” I’ve seen large packets of salad for about 2 quid at Waitrose and Tesco. How is a £4 packet of crisps or £5+ fast food meal cheaper?

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

It’s not just about buying salads or living on salads. Home cooked pasta in some most basic and simple tomato sauce is so much better than eating that rubbish. There’s nothing much you can do if people don’t enjoy putting some thought into their food (and in their minds).

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

if we eat unhealthy food [greasy, spicy, red meat friendly, desi ghee, Dalda, oils, homogenized milk, chocolates, pop, candies] at home then the home-made food is no better than foods from the fast food outlets.

i would rather eat healthy food either at home or at some restaurant from their healthy food menu.

Fast food exists mainly in urban centres where theres a high paced lifestyle. Thats where McDonald’s and the like thrive because the lawyers and investment bankers who are always on the run dont have time to put together a healthy lunch. Big gap in the market for quick and accesible healthy food. Its mind boggling that it hasnt been filled yet

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

its not lawyers and ibankers who are getting fat on mcDs, it is the minimum wage earning 16 hour work day people who are. there are plenty of upscale healthy and quick options for the former - not cheap. there are like three whole foods buffets within a 2 mile radius of me, and its not even that fancy a n’hood. its about affordability. it is going to cost close to 20 dollars to get a 700-800 calorie meal at the whole foods buffet. 5 dollars at mcDs.

Re: The Fast Food Debate!

^ Right on queer :k:

At Whole foods a takeaway box of macaroni and cheese made of organic flour/milk/cheese and fancy parsley added bread crumbs costs exactly $13. I can’t afford that for my daughters every time we are out, but 2 medium fries at a price of $5.18, that I can…oh the life of middle class families
