Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift

Saw it yesterday. From an action stand-point, its pretty good, with several race sequences, including a pretty hairy one in Tokyo’s crowded streets, and a couple of really interesting drifting sequences, one in a covered parking lot and the other on mountain roads. Some good shots of real Tokyo lifestyle, including small and crowded homes, video game parlors and a bath house. Good cinematography.

Acting was borderline mediocre and story/plot was written by a 5-year old. One Japanese character (Hans) was pretty cool. The other was a stuck up moron (DK). The funniest part of the movie was when a character asks our hero, supposedly to intimidate him, “do you know what DK stands for?” (DK are the initials of our villian). And the hero responds innocently enough “donkey kong?” (in reality the initials stood for ‘Drifting Kid’, in apparent reference to his amazing drifting skills), but you have the excuse our hero, since he had no clue what drifting was, at that time.

All in all, if you set your expectations, solely to enjoy the racing scenes, then you’d be happy. Anything more intelligent then that, and you should move it to your DVD list, with a good surround sound system at your home.

By the way, this is the review from SF Chronicle, which is biting, but quite accurate.

Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift

By the way, for the sake of comparison, the original Fast and the Furious, with Vin Diesel will seem like a masterpiece. Especially its first scene with four Honda Civics going after a big rig is clearly memorable, compared to this one, with hardly anything memorable.

And for a second by the way, Vin Diesel makes a cameo appearance here as well. This is not a spoiler, since his role is hardly anything of significance or relation to the (non-existent) story line.

Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift

Well check Images for a GTR that took part in this movie…

Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift

Vin Diesel..

Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift

Original Fast & Furious with Vin diesel and Paul Walker was the best. It had a good story line, perfect characters and nice action sequences. Producer killed the theme when he didn't sign Vin Diesel in 2 Fast 2 Furious; I heard that he did it to keep the budget down. 2 Fast 2 Furious was not that bad, Tyrese did fairly OK job filling in for Diesel.

I watched the 3rd one on last weekend, and I'm pretty much disappointed. I totally agree with Faisal Bhai's comments, if you just wanna watch some action sequences, go and watch the movie, otherwise wait for the DVD, as the storyline is crappy.

Vin Diesel making a guest appearance, Faisal Bhai, do you think they flew in Vin Diesel all the way to Tokyo for just that shot, or they used some kind of animation?

I would give this movie 5/10

Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift

man, this movie sucked. Waste of time it is, really. I shoulda watched Nacho Libre instead.

Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift

I heard good reviews about it. but havent seen it yet

Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift

I found it to be entertaining for what its worth. I went with the lowest expectation anyone could ever have for a movie and was pleasently surprised. In all honesty, I was expecting a near B-Grade film but excellent production value made it better than what I originally thought it would be. Here are the negatives followed by the positives.

First off, why does the dude have an f'd up accent? It sounded like an accent that Kevin Federline may have.... trailer trash hick meets NY street corner hustler. If it wasn't for the fact that at one point in the movie his IM nick is shown as "Bama_Boy", I would have never guessed that he is supposed to be some southern dude. Secondly, there is very little background information given about each character, which makes it hard to connect with them. This may have to do with the fact that they will probably create a sequel of this storyline (Vin Diesel's cameo kinda fuels that thought as well) but still. Its as if they knew that no one would care about the characters and that it should be street racing, drifting to be exact, that is the main focus. Also, as Faisal pointed out, acting was horrible (but thankfully its wasn't horrible enough that it started to annoy you), the fact which became absolutely apparent at some key points in the movie. That supposed mixed chick had the worst acting of all. I know that the director's intention was to probably make it look like she cared about the hero and thats why she wanted him to go away and stuff but because of her lack of expressions on the face, it made it seem as if she was doing all of that just to save her own ass. Han was most defiintely the only good actor in the entire movie.

The positives were nice since unlike the negatives, I did not expect them. First off, they depicted the lives of teenagers in Tokyo in good detail and from all that I have heard, quite accuratly as well. They also did a good job of giving the viewers a feel of downtown Tokyo and how unique and everything it really is. Although I have to say that they sometimes went overboard, like when they showed the entire highschool staring at the hero, as if everyone in the school is part of the illegal drifting scene. I'll also ignore the fact that they kept on shoving brand names, car related or otherwise, up our throats constatnly throughout the movie. But anyways, coming back to the positives, there were quite a few drift racing sequences as well. The one in downtown Tokyo, in between all the traffic, was really nice. Also, although not a car racing sequence, the scene where Han is shown talking about how this is his Mexico and kids playing soccer in the background, was quite mesmirizing on the big screen. There were a lot of positives in the movie but the fact that all their budget was spent on the technical side, leaving the acting part short on talent, really brought the overall value of the movie down. A couple of remotely decent actors would have done wonders for it. Also, if they were to drag the movie atleast half an hour longer, that would have helped a lot in character development and such. It really looked as if the director wanted to fit in a lot of stuff on a really short film reel.

Overall, just for sheer entertainment value, and the fact that I had zero expectations for it when i went in, I would give it 7 out of 10. Just don't expect it to win any Academy awards anytime soon.
