Re: The Fast and Furious ..Tokyo Drift
I found it to be entertaining for what its worth. I went with the lowest expectation anyone could ever have for a movie and was pleasently surprised. In all honesty, I was expecting a near B-Grade film but excellent production value made it better than what I originally thought it would be. Here are the negatives followed by the positives.
First off, why does the dude have an f'd up accent? It sounded like an accent that Kevin Federline may have.... trailer trash hick meets NY street corner hustler. If it wasn't for the fact that at one point in the movie his IM nick is shown as "Bama_Boy", I would have never guessed that he is supposed to be some southern dude. Secondly, there is very little background information given about each character, which makes it hard to connect with them. This may have to do with the fact that they will probably create a sequel of this storyline (Vin Diesel's cameo kinda fuels that thought as well) but still. Its as if they knew that no one would care about the characters and that it should be street racing, drifting to be exact, that is the main focus. Also, as Faisal pointed out, acting was horrible (but thankfully its wasn't horrible enough that it started to annoy you), the fact which became absolutely apparent at some key points in the movie. That supposed mixed chick had the worst acting of all. I know that the director's intention was to probably make it look like she cared about the hero and thats why she wanted him to go away and stuff but because of her lack of expressions on the face, it made it seem as if she was doing all of that just to save her own ass. Han was most defiintely the only good actor in the entire movie.
The positives were nice since unlike the negatives, I did not expect them. First off, they depicted the lives of teenagers in Tokyo in good detail and from all that I have heard, quite accuratly as well. They also did a good job of giving the viewers a feel of downtown Tokyo and how unique and everything it really is. Although I have to say that they sometimes went overboard, like when they showed the entire highschool staring at the hero, as if everyone in the school is part of the illegal drifting scene. I'll also ignore the fact that they kept on shoving brand names, car related or otherwise, up our throats constatnly throughout the movie. But anyways, coming back to the positives, there were quite a few drift racing sequences as well. The one in downtown Tokyo, in between all the traffic, was really nice. Also, although not a car racing sequence, the scene where Han is shown talking about how this is his Mexico and kids playing soccer in the background, was quite mesmirizing on the big screen. There were a lot of positives in the movie but the fact that all their budget was spent on the technical side, leaving the acting part short on talent, really brought the overall value of the movie down. A couple of remotely decent actors would have done wonders for it. Also, if they were to drag the movie atleast half an hour longer, that would have helped a lot in character development and such. It really looked as if the director wanted to fit in a lot of stuff on a really short film reel.
Overall, just for sheer entertainment value, and the fact that I had zero expectations for it when i went in, I would give it 7 out of 10. Just don't expect it to win any Academy awards anytime soon.
