The extent of gambling in everyday life

Salaam Alaikum,

Is it true that If you buy a product just because it has a chance to allow you to win a prize, is also categorized as gambling?

Example: You go to Food Market for grocery shopping. Your favorite brand of cereal is available, but right next to it there’s another cereal for the same price or lowered slightly but it has prizes. If normally you would not buy it, and pick your usual cereal, but this time you opt to buy that other cereal because you want to win something. Have you just gambled?

Could the same be then applied to Surveys that pay you, or is that actual earning because you had to do something for that money?

:wsalam: & Peace teggy,

I think its more likely trade not gambling. Means u spent money on something which is better or can benefit. Gambling is like you know about something and purposely you spend money on that in hope (greed) to get more but if you lose, you get nothing.

In buying something like cereal, you spent money on it and in return you get cereal or more but u won’t lose anything.

On the other hand, I believe the winners are already pre-selected/chosen peoples and peoples just don’t win randomly.

Salaam Alaikum brother LK, JazakAllah for taking the time to share your thoughts on the matter. I would like to follow it with more questions. Please excuse me.

Isn't the reward based on intention? If your intention is to win the prize, and usual product is coming anyways. Doesn't that mean you intended to "pay a little more" in hope that you would win something? Suppose the item was marked up, but has a very attractive offer. What then?

In USA at least, the first scenario is considered gambling. That is why for all the product our service related possible winnings, there is always a disclaimer that says that no purchase necessary

Its oky feel free to follow it with questions as many as u want

Yes, the reward based on intention and intention is to win the prize. Even we pay little more in hope to win something but in addition to that ‘something’ which we already got even by paying little more. Means we don’t return empty hands.

If we see other way then we offer our duties for 8 hours and we get paid for only 8 hours but if we work extra then our intention is to gain more money, precisely speaking in our 8 hours we work with high efficiency and accuracy in hope that either our salary increased, or we get bonus or will be promoted. Here in our extra efficiency and accuracy we already getting paid for 8 hours. Similar to this when we pay little more for something, we already get thing either we win or lose. So I think it is not fall under gambling.

Gambling is like you pay to get more and there is only two things for sure. Either you get more or lose from all what u already paid for.

Furthermore, it is mentioned in Holy Quran, Chapter 3 verse 14 that the men always covent for more and feel proud on the pleasure of the present world’s life. No wonder if we prefer to choose ‘things’ which have some winning prize on it, even for that we pay little more…that is only and only for our pleasure. BUT WE PREFER NOT TO PAY/SPENT THAT “LITTLE MOR AMOUNT” IN THE WAY OF ALMIGHTY ALLAH. :frowning:

Hope I’m able to clear it now
