you know our mom's can be annoying to us (at times) just like some MILs. perhaps if we just take out the in-law part of it and start thinking of them as our mom then we would all get along (and vice versa). If we can deal with the things our own Moms do then we should be able to deal with out MILs the same way...treat them with the same respect if not more.

^ that's true. and we should do it like that..
but the thing is that with our own mom's we can argue with them, yell at them (i don't mean being disrespectful..you guys know what i mean)..and stay mad at them for a couple of hours/days...
but you can do that with your MIL - there's this 'boundary' that you can't cross with her, because it's such a grey area
i could never imagine being my MIL they way I am with my mom. different comfort level i guess..

MasaAllah its good to see so many happy MIL & DIL relationships.
I can say that when I lived with my MIL, things got a bit hot sometimes. She just likes her way but my own mom can be that way too. Overall my MIL is a nice person and cares about me. It would not be wrong to say that she has mellowed down with age :)
I do feel that I have to respect MIL more than my mom.
