Just watched Al Jazeera and there some to be some ethnic riots going on in Assam akin to the ones on Gujarat. Anybody know what this is all about?

It is between illegal bangladeshi immigrants who have settled in Assam against the native tribal Bodos who are hindu/christians/animist.
The Bodos are a mongoloid group historically from tibet/china area.

its about time indian government does something about this illegal immigrants
heard from one of my bengali friend that most of calcutta is nowadays occupies by immigrants from bangladesh

This is pre election thing, illegal immigrants will be displaced for sometimes and as soon as elections are over, one can find bengalis all over again:)

Off topic but it is evident that's how immigrants are treated elsewhere, and then there is Pakistan who hosted Afghanis with open hearts.

Afghnistan is war torn country, so pakistan's help is understandble on human grounds, but these bangladeshis, are now found in both assam and tripura since 71 war, many of them didn't return because of good oppertunities available here, Bangladesh was more populous than pakistan then but now their population is less than pakistan due to illegal immigration in India.

India should do something to legalize the present illegals staying in India and prevent any new illegals from coming in.

but for domicile one needs a date, like all kashmiri pandits who were domiciled before 1989 violence still have documents of domicile. stopping from porus border is difficult

there is bengal there already called west bengal, and even if bengalis want another bengal who will help them?

I think even in Western Bengal there are many Bangladeshis now.

can't distinguish them in west bengal, as there is no ethnic division there, ahoms look different from bengalis, while in West Bengal every one look same, and both bengals have significant minorty population as well, Bangladesh has hindu bengali and India has muslim bengali, one can not seprate out in West Bengal

The Bangladeshis are funny people, in their own country they have not allowed the Biharis to come out of their camps and on the other side they are infilitrating India and creating a mini bangaldesh there.

The media reports. A majority are stating it has become an ethnic/sectarian conflict.

While I agree that something needs to be done about the illegal immigrants, riots are not an answer. The response of the Indian govt leaves much to be desired. It took a while to normalize the situation. There have been stories of heroism from both the sides. I just wish that these incidents do not repeat again.

This is pure ethnic violence between native assamese, bodos against bengalis which are both hindus and muslims, it is not like anyother region in India:)
