the ethical status of mooching

So this might not be a religious question, then again maybe it is.

The milk for coffee in our office fridge is practically communal. theres usually multiple bottles of it that people indiscriminately drink from, if its unmarked its communal. now there is no declared agreement about this, nor does anyone coordinate the milk supply, that i know of. I usually bring in milk every ten fifteen days figuring thats how much milk i’ve consumed over this period.

but everytime i take milk from the fridge i feel guilty since i dont know who brought that milk and whether or not he/she believes in the communality of the milk. on the other hand when i bring my own milk it gets finished very very quickly (and its good that it does because otherwise i dont drink enough coffee to finish the milk before it goes bad).

what should i do?

Re: the ethical status of mooching

I'd say figure out how much milk is needed for tea or coffee and then get the money from your office manager or whoever.
and if your office cannot afford even tea and coffee milk for employees then i would look into working some place else.

Re: the ethical status of mooching

jazbati admi hain aap kafi.

it isnt about money yar, its about whether i can take milk that i dont know is intended for communal use.

Re: the ethical status of mooching

tea/coffee r usually on the company's budget....

and if not, am sure u can co-ordinate among the staff....

Re: the ethical status of mooching

Why not ask the office manager/someone who is in a senior position as to whether the milk and stuff is communal.

Like in our office, the milk is communal along with tea/coffee....but if someone wants to drink milk/use in cereals they bring their own and mark it with their name...this is because the company provides the milk for Tea and coffeee

Re: the ethical status of mooching

hm okay. thanks guys.

Re: the ethical status of mooching

1/2 and 1/2 is so much better in coffee. I keep a small, unmarked jar that no one will touch in the fridge (cuz the don't know what it is). I sometimes use a little juice container to "hide it" and to make sure that I always have cream. Sounds more like something from Hints to Heloise than a religious forum post, but it works for me.

Re: the ethical status of mooching

sounds like a medium bin GMAT problem.. I have the answer.. 10 cows! am I right?

Re: the ethical status of mooching

hmm if you want it to be a religious question then we'd have 2 start by discussin who works in ur office and whether any of them are idol worshippers and how many are people of the book.
otherwise lol it doesnt look like ur gna get to0o many sensible answers for this. if no1 else has made a fuss over the milk (like hearing som1 yell 'who the hell drank all my milk') then i think its safe to assume that every1 is comfrtable with this system of 'chipping in' and allowing others 2 drink bits of their milk bcz they probly drink bits of others' 2.

often a system is informal, not verbally confirmed, but is perfect and shudnt b messed with.
thats my disabled wisdom of the day.

if ur still not comfrtable then mayb plant an anonymous post-it (or u cud sign it Bob) asking 'DO u kno ur milk is communal?'
maybe u'd get more enlightening answers there... in th fridge...

Ravage, I am sure your fellow work mates are not giving this as much thought as you are, after all you said the milk is communal, so dont worry.
