The Queen of Likes has a kitchen corner. In honor of our resident Philosopher and Environmentalists Mr. Monk, this Environmental Corner has been created.
Folks concerned ( or not) about the environment can post here. Only requirement - shall have proven derailing skills.
The melting of the Polar Ice Caps has been in the news for awhile. According to a recent study published in SCIENCE, this has contributed to 1.1 cm or half inch rise to sea levels since 1992 or 20% of total increase.
Previous satellite measurements on ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica had accuracy issues.
In the 90s melting of ice sheets gave rise to 10% of sealevel rise. Now it is 30%.
How do sea levels rise
50% due to higher sea water temp leading to expansion.
increased melting of Gnlnd and Antrtca ice sheets.
Ocean current temps and air temp warmer in Gnlnd.
So how contrbn from ice sheet melting separated.
Measure diff between annual snow fall on ice sheets and mass of ice that melts or breaks off the sheets.
The latest effort claims 2x accuracy of previous. 67% of sheets lost from gnlnd.
Are these man made? Well in 1994 ice sheet contributed 0 mmto sea level increase. Cumulative increase in next 5 years = 2 mm. Increase in next 13 years? 9 mm. Clear acceleration. Monk will be concerned.
it is concerning what the rising sea levels will do to shore-based communities and island inhabitants…
cities like new york, london, new orleans are already impacted; they need storm surge defenses even now, what would happen if sea levels rose even further
wouldn’t the inhabitants of Maldives, Nigeria and other such low lying place face displacement?
something needs to be done…awareness is the first step but actually taking steps to protect our environment … that is something i think where we are severely insufficient
