The end for Bevan and Bichel?

Michael Bevan and Andy Bichel have been dropped from Australia’s list of centrally contracted players for 2004-05. The announcement all but ends the international careers of the pair, although the board pointed out that uncontracted players would still be considered for selection.

“Michael Bevan has been a wonderful player for Australia over many years, particularly in the one-day arena,” said Trevor Hohns, the chief selector. "However, it was felt that [his] contribution to the one-day side has decreased. We won’t be picking him for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe and therefore we consider it’s time to move on. We’re looking to the future now and … it’s time we started to form a core group of players that we think will represent Australia at that next World Cup.

“Andy Bichel has played a vital role in our sides over recent times,” Hohns continued. “However, it is fair to say we showed our hand during the summer when he was omitted from various teams in both forms of the game. With the fast bowlers currently representing Australia and the emerging fast-bowling talent around the country, we couldn’t find a place for Andy on the list.”

Brad Hodge and Shaun Tait were offered contracts for the first time, and Michael Hussey, his third. Matthew Elliott was brought back into the fold after a prolific season for his state, while Michael Kasprowicz and Simon Katich were upgraded to full-year contracts.

Hohns said runs scored was the factor that led to Elliott’s recall. “The amount of runs Matthew has scored over the last couple of years we found irresistible,” he explained. “He just demanded inclusion in this list, as did Brad Hodge.”

Nathan Bracken, Ashley Noffke and Nathan Hauritz were also dropped, while Steve Waugh retired in January.

Contracted players receive a basic retainer fee, besides match fees, tour fees and prize money. The minimum retainer is $140,000, and match fees are $12,100 for Tests and $4850 for one-dayers.

Contracted players Michael Clarke, Matthew Elliott, Adam Gilchrist, Jason Gillespie, Ian Harvey, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hodge, Brad Hogg, Michael Hussey, Michael Kasprowicz, Simon Katich, Justin Langer, Darren Lehmann, Martin Love, Stuart MacGill, Jimmy Maher, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Ricky Ponting, Andrew Symonds, Shaun Tait, Shane Warne, Shane Watson, Brad Williams.

had he been a pakistani player, he wud have been playnig till he was 45 and not dropped even if he came with 10 consecutive ducks....

Not just Pakistan, my dear friend.

^^

exactly - i have yet to witnesss a Pakistani cricketer to play as he hits 40! - and that is without any break and coming out of retirement!

anyhow - a scrwed up by Cricket Australia - why on earth you don't wanna give a contract to a duo who has saved your arse many many times? it's ridiculous! Bevan and Bichel struggled in one or two games - and Cricket Australia decided their days are over! Sheesh! pagal hai Trevor Hohns

Imran bhai :D well, a few months shy of 40 anyway.

Non-contracted players can still be selected, and Bevan is definitely going to be inlcuded in a few more XI's before he is eventually shoved under the carpet by the selectors. He's been one of the best ODI players over the years, but time to move on and prepare for the next WC.

For all it's ruthlesness, I admire the aussie attitude with selection: either perform or back you go into the outback. The truly great will fight back to win their place in such situations anyway (Taylor, Wuagh etc.).

Bichel was given a prety extended run and he failed to deliver. I don't think he deserved a re-singing at all, and was actually more surprised Nathan Bracken wasn't offered one.

recently Mark Waugh hit back at Cricket Australia for not giving Bevan contract - and he(Bevan) has been thinking about playing for English county - at least that's what his agent said so - i do admit you have to take care the future of the team but when i think of Aussies - rebuilding of the team is always the last thing on my mind.

Aussies hasn't been at full-strength since West Indies tour - and they won't be till Champions trophy in september - still they manage to win games! Bichel was out of touch for a game - so was Micheal - and to drop them base on that is utterly rubbish.
