The economic mess in Pakistan

It is true that the persistent economic mess in the country is not the fault of this govt. Pakistani govts have been spending more than they have been collecting since forever. They have always borrowed and printed money to cover their deficit. They have always hoped that economic growth will bail them out. But economic growth has been hampered by structural flaws in the economy that no government has addressed. Too much regulation, price controls, subsidies, cronyism, unprofitable state owned companies. And yes, corruption too, but its scale is exaggerated too much. IMF programs have helped somewhat by restraining govt borrowings and urging some structural reform. But as soon as IMF programs are over all govts are back to their old ways.
The problem with this government is that it is also not doing anything different. It has not cut government spending. It is borrowing more and printing more money. Nor, it has made any serious stab at structural reforms (which can be politically costly in the short term). Still the same over-regulation, the same cronyism, the same price controls, the same subsidies and no privatization. This can't go on forever.

is it good time to buy property in pakistan or should wait more time?

lol the Pound is nearly 200Rs!

The only long term solution to our economic mess is to control our population - we have example of Korea who were almost equal to us in 1950 and now they are 2 times of that.

Wr are now 6 times of what we were in 1950.

You can do the economic comparison yourself!

The relationship between population growth and economic growth is controversial. Low population growth in high-income countries is likely to create social and economic problems while high population growth in low-income countries may slow their development. International migration could help to adjust these imbalances but is opposed by many.

Its all about the priorities. Economy is rarely the #1 priority for our governments. Which is very ironic. I dont want to make this thread political but even current govt (despite their promises) didnt have this as priority. All they have been focusing on is political vendetta which in turn is running investors away. Stocks are trashed, GDP is ruined and look at the value of currency. Just remember, numbers dont lie.

And for the temp band-aid, IMF to the rescue which in turn means longterm disaster.

I don’t think so! We have never been able to achieve any reasonable literacy rate which would have helped us to be more advanced in technolgy as the South East Asians nations did! There was not wide spread corruption in the 50’s and 60’s - another rise which I can attribute to increase in population.

No I did not necessarily disagree with you. My point being the population itself is not the only reason for economic decline or malaise. As you would know population growth tends to bring up the GDP as long as the resources and infrastructure are there to sustain the growth in population and provide opportunities. Countries with very high HDI such as Canada and Australia have enjoyed very high level of migration and resulting population boom over the last decade and infact prospered. On other hand other higher HDI countries like Norway or Switzerland have had negligible population growth but still among the top countries.

So as long as there is proper planning, resources and infrastructure available to accommodate a large population growth, a country will prosper and achieve wealth. Historically countries with a combination of significantly large population as well as wealth enjoyed political and financial leverage like the USA or former USSR. China in recent times is heading in the same direction.

Your first post somewhat suggested (even if you did not mean it) that increasing population is the sole or dominant evil that restricts a nation’s economic growth.

I agree with post # 11 (strangely enough).

@Mostar95 if population was the detrimental factor behind any country’s lagging economy, India would not have been the new America & China today wouldn’t have been the number one economy. All of this has come through a proper planning. Unfortunately, those who have taken out the time to know a bit about this are labelled as schizophrenics & conspiracy theorist by the zombie population & hence are easier to be silenced by anti pakistan mafias around the world.

N-league government was removed through scandals because they were working on several major important projects to strengthen economy. As long as this government keeps on contributing to drowning economy even more, they will be allowed to stay. The moment they start making policies to counter mafias clever evil gameplan to crush pakistani economy, this government will also be take out through any of the tools that have used historically to remove any government that works for the country.

Lekin dekhen aap sab ne ghabrana nai aay

Pakistan is struggling due to high debt and no significant increase in exports, loan payments due. This is what current government is doing:

https://www.dawn.com/news/1469991

The government is repaying the loan previous governments borrowed, it will probably kill PTI’s chances of next government because amount of loan and payments are not clear to population they only see ‘inflation, dollar price, petrol prices etc’. People have short term memory and social media anti-PTI propagandists are claiming as if petrol was never over 100Rs in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s finance minister and his team should be changed and this portfolio should be given to some better person who is well versed in economic issues

What people don’t understand is that it is the same team (The actual masters) controlling the country that was controlling it in the previous government & all the past governments. Yes , the conditions during different governments keep changing from worst to less worse to better to fair to better to worse to worst… It is because even if the best of people join hands & come into power to run this country, they all ultimately can do nothing without the approval of the real controlling team (the actual masters). And those actual masters are the ones that never allow any progress in Pakistan.

News related to major oil discovery were ordered to stop being released after 29th March. There are either ambiguous reports & opinions after that or negative. No fact based news about the reality on ground. Are journalists being denied entry just like in gawadar so that public could be kept in dark about the real facts? Most likely, hidden deals have been made between different parties hence; as always, it will not benefit Pakistan public but a few who’ve made hidden deals. A well known international couldn’t be making those claims on baseless facts or rumors. The fact is Pakistani awaam is stupid and are being taken advantage of since forever by the greedy eating up this country.

Why are you so anti nationalistic. We have a great PM who is doing good things. Why don?t you leave our country if you hate it so much.

Population growth is a symptom and not a cause of poverty. As sustained economic growth has made countries more prosperous their population growth rates have come down dramatically without any central population planning.

The secret to economic success is not a secret any longer. It is simply economic freedom.
The only way for Pakistan to get out of its economic mess is a massive deregulation and privatization effort and a drastic shrinking of the govt (including the military).

Hopefully you haven’t told that to your honay wala or actual wala as he/she would take as they say the patli galli to get the hell out of dodge.

I do agree that PTI should have an agenda aside from “Madinah ki Riyasat”. I wouldn’t lie and say that they haven’t been handed a bad situation with five years of Darnomics.

I think that Imran is just waiting it out to get a full majority in the next govt like in KP now. Of course, this is the optimist scenario since if he fails then it is up to Billo Rani :sadaf:

Aap log khwamkha chinta karrae hen.

Faisal wada kehnda hai 1 week men itni jobs hungi ke banday kam par jaenge. No economic mess at all. Ask anyone in Pakistan
