Originating from Iran, Kashi is one of the oldest handicrafts of Sindh. Kashi is a term applied to enamelled work on the Terracotta base. Kashi is a Persian word which means designating to the tiles or trimmed to the form of pieces of faience serving to cover entire, or partial fabric of a building principally decorative.
A special technique is applied to prepare the blue colour from a mixture of cobalt oxide and copper oxide.
In Pakistan, the main centres of Kashi Kari are in Multan, Lahore, Thatta, Hala, Nasarpur, Mahra Sharif and Dera Ismail Khan. However, due to lack of resources, the art is fading in the region.
Here are some pictures of the dying art taken in Nasarpur.
Interestingly, Kashi was not popular in Sindh (Hala and Thatta) till 18th century. Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai had to travel to Multan for buying Kashi's tiles for tomb of his grandfather Hazrat Abdul Karim of BulRi Sharif. Hala is few miles from Bhit Shah near Hyderabad.

not dying, but its now limited to traditional stuff. People used to have kashi tiles at their home, but now latest designs are more in fashion. Just recently, when my cousin asked me to selct some patterns for our home, he also suggested some patterns for out gate which were used at maamoo’s house and were similar to kashi designs. I said to him ‘nahi, ye to koi maqbara lage ga’
There is this decorative "nook" type of space in our house and I was intending to decorate it with tiles. I rather liked the type of tiles done on some of the older buildings in Herat but have been rather unsuccessful finding that style of tiles.
