**First things first â kudos to the cast and crew for bringing out a film like this! **âThe Dirty Pictureâ has all the ingredients of a commercial cinema to keep the audience engaged for 140 minutes, and believe me, itâs definitely not a biopic, and for sure the movie doesnât feel like a documentary. The makers of the film wanted to accomplish three things with this film, which are â âentertainment, entertainment, entertainmentâ. Todayâs audience wants entertainment, and the film just provides us with that.
**Synopsis: **As we already know, the film is inspired by the life of âSilkâ Smitha â the sex siren who rocked the south film industry during the eighties and the early nineties. Thus the name of the lead character in the film, âSilkâ. But I believe the similarities just end here. Reshma aka âSilkâ is a girl from a small town in Tamil Nadu who runs off to Madras just before the day she is to get married to fulfill her ambition of becoming an actress. But as fate has it, she is unable to garner any opportunities of becoming a lead lady and ends up being a âsex sirenâ and a âvampâ in films. The rest of the story is about how her career reaches new heights and how it falls to unseen depths, as she becomes addicted to alcohol and begins to age.
Cast and Performances: The primary cast of the film includes names like Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor.
Naseeruddin Shah plays the role of a âSouthern Superstarâ and he fits the bill perfectly. Tusshar Kapoor plays Nasseruddin Shahâs brother and a budding writer who falls for âSilkâ. His character in the film is a very subtle one and he gels into his role well. Coming to Emraan Hashmi, one has to say that his acting only keeps improving. Emraan Hashmiâs voice plays a crucial role in the film as he is also narrating the story and his hatred for âSilkâ. His encounters with Vidya Balan are simply superb.
But of all the cast, the credit definitely has to go the lead lady Vidya Balan. There was Parineeta, then was Ishqiya, then No One Killed Jessica and now itâs The Dirty Picture. One has to say that sheâs gotta have guts to play such an audacious character that smokes, drinks, shows oodles of cleavage and utters filthy one-liners. Vidya Balanâs efforts have to be supremely appreciated for she manages to pull off everything that the character requires with supreme panache while not making it look vulgar. For those of you who were thinking that Vidya Balan was risking her career playing the role of âSilkâ and she doesnât have the âoomph factorâ of Silk Smitha, just watch the movie and decide for yourself what the lady is capable of.
The rest of the cast is just as convincing.
**Technical Departments: **After Vidya Balan, the film belongs to the writer, Rajat Arora. His story, screenplay and dialogues are simply superb. It is tough to write an entertaining film inspired by the true story of a âsex goddessâ who ended her life abruptly. But Rajat Arora does a fabulous job, and a few one-liners and dialouges of his are sure going to have the audience in splits.
The camera work and editing are slick and suit the mood of the film. âOo la laâ is already playing on many lips, and the background is perfect.
Lastly, the credit has to go to Milan Luthria. This veteran filmmaker is just continuing his form from his last outing (Once Upon a Time in Mumbai). He succeeded in extracting brilliant performances from all his actors and the lead lady especially.
Final Say: âThe Dirty Picture â Definitely Notâ

Re: The Dirty Picture - Bollywood Movie
starboxoffice review
The Dirty Picture has been aggressively promoted and Vidyaâs assets are going to ensure a houseful weekend.
So Vidya plays razor-tongued Reshma who becomes Silk, a simple girl with big dreams who colours the fantasies of men across the nation. Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor, and Emraan Hashmi play her lovers at different stages. The film is about how fame gets to her head and how addictions, failure and "unrequited" love cause her downfall.
The first half of the film is entertaining and Vidya wins you over right away, as does Naseeruddin. The second half of the film is completely different and slow. There is a catty song which is plain silly and unnecessary. Also, a part of the background score is a straight lift from Inception.
Authenticity goes out the window whenever the makers please. There were no foreigners in movies in the 1980s, âgoodâ leading actresses didnât have short hair or wear short dresses, and Sufi dancers (dervishes) were unheard of so the Ishq sufiyana song is completely incongruous. There is a scene where Tussharâs Ramakant is teaching Vidyaâs Silk to drive and she doesnât know it at all but then a few minutes later, she is driving like a pro! You can see that TDP works in parts, it has certain impressive nuanced scenes, but it doesnât work as a whole. It is like Vidya Balan doing a Salman Khan film.
The Dirty Picture makes fun of Silk Smitha and doesnât give her respect. Silk starts off as a very feisty and daring woman but is defeated by life. The motive for her suicide in the end is not convincing enough and ruins the movie. The movie doesnât really celebrate her life, it mocks her life saying that here is a woman who dared to be different, who dared to tantalize audiences but she felt unloved and cheap and killed herself because she didnât feel loved! And this comes at a point when she has found somebody who actually loves her the way she is and at her lowest low! So the regressive end defeats the purpose of the movie! The makers have tried to make it moving and tragic but you hardly feel any emotion as it all comes across as quite pseudo and shallow. Calling the movie exploitative and frivolous is an under-statement and TDP is not very different from the very films it mocks. It doesnât celebrate women, either.
Rajat Aroraa has inundated the film with filthy double-meaning lines, corny idioms, wannabe poetry, similes, and preachy stuff we can do without. It gets predictable and annoying after a point. There is a major Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai hangover. The pedestrian lines were written with the sole purpose to provoke and to play to the gallery.
Needless to say, Vidya Balan is the soul of the film. Her vulnerability and playful smile are irresistible and she makes it evident that she is having fun playing the character. The character takes a drastic turn in the second half and she portrays the graph well. She is out of her clothes through most of the film. You wonder if she ever dresses like a normal person. To be fair, she is full covered in one scene. But why did she have to stoop to such a level; to do such a titillating, in-your-face film? The roles are completely different but her seductress character in Ishqiya was subtle and classy but more effective. If you must watch this film, she is the one and only reason. Naseeruddin Shah is excellent and pitch-perfect as the delusional and lecherous ageing star. He is entertaining and loathsome in equal measure and kudos to him for doing this role. Tusshar Kapoor is blank, spineless, and annoying. Why was he even there?! Emraan Hashmi has played the same (disgruntled) character too many times before so he offers nothing new. We expected a meatier role for him but we were disappointed. He is a good narrator, though. Anju Mahendroo plays a film journalist effectively but the role is badly written. She is omnipresent and why does she randomly pass comments on Silk? Who is she talking to?! Also, a film journo of her stature will not share the same room as her colleagues. The movie mocks journalists as the "best journalist of the year" is conned by Silk. Why are there no other journalistic points of view in the film?
The Dirty Picture could have been a meaningful and touching movie but it looks like a titillating picture that has been made to cater to single screens and it betrays its own subject. Vidya Balan is the only reason to watch it.
Re: The Dirty Picture - Bollywood Movie
"Vidya Balan is the only reason to watch it."
as said above magar, my dear... as said in the movie itself...
"log samaan dekhtay haen, dukaan nahi" :D
Re: The Dirty Picture - Bollywood Movie
I went to see it last night, lyrics are funny, corny and crude. first half of the film represents her rise which is well shown, however her decline is hardly there, and then she dies! all very glued together and does not fit job.
Vidya did not suit this role, as much as she tried to act it, she just doesnt have that slutty street garb that this role required.
Naseerudin shah did well, his role was good, but Tasheer was hardly there and hardly significant, and for Emraan Hashmi's role, well it was just sort of thrown in (!) and didnt really fit into place.
storyline was weak towards the end, overall not highly impressed.
Re: The Dirty Picture - Bollywood Movie
finally watched it.
and really liked it.....story was good and vidya acted really well....everyone else was fine in their roles.....perhaps it depicts the reality of cinema.
vidyas appearance was spot on....she portrayed 'silk smitha' very well...since most of the tamil side actresses are heavy and appear this way.
overall 9/10.
Re: The Dirty Picture - Bollywood Movie
picture fuzool hay, acting zabardast hay!!
Re: The Dirty Picture - Bollywood Movie
