I am thinking I read somewhere that family lines can be traced by miochondrial DNA...however...could be mistaken.

what you posted means genes dont cross over on the Y chromosome frequently during gamete formation (meiosis). nowhere does it say that the Y chromosome has nothing to do with predicting genetic traits.

yes, women manage without it, and that is because women are different from men genetically. the Y chromosome has genes that dictate some of the traits that come with being a man.

Quite right. Can you imagine if y chromosome studies suggested that Syeds were also descendants of Imran like the Cohens?

According to the Quran:

[Al-Imran 3:33.16] Lo! Allah preferred Adam and Noah and the Family of Abraham and the Family of 'Imran above (all His) creatures.

Imran is ofcourse reported to be the father of Aaron and Moses in the Islamic traditions. For example,

Sahih Muslim 001:0317Abu al-'Aliya reported: Ibn Abbas, the son of your Prophet’s uncle, told us that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) had observed: On the night of my night journey I passed by Moses b.** 'Imran **(peace be upon him), a man light brown in complexion, tall. well-built as if he was one of the men of the Shanu’a, and saw Jesus son of Mary as a medium-statured man with white and red complexion and crisp hair, and I was shown Malik the guardian of Fire, and Dajjal amongst the signs which were shown to me by Allah. He (the narrator) observed: Then do not doubt his (i. e. of the Holy Prophet) meeting with him (Moses). Qatada elucidated it thus: Verily the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him), met Moses (peace be upon him).
