It is a title used by those who claim to be father to son descendants of Ali the fourth caliph and Fatima-the Prophet p’s daughter.

Just my personal opinion, but it would be fascinating to see with the help of y chromosome analysis, if all these Syeds in the world really have the same male ancestor. Kindda tell who is faking it lol. On a more serious side, such a study may also help resolve the mystery of the prophet’s own genetic identity, whether he was from Alay Imran or descendant of Prophet Ismail. Y chromosome studies among Jews who claim to belong to the Alay Imran have been found to carry a unique genetic marker that differentiates them from the common lay Jew. It is sometimes also called the Moses marker. From Islamic history, we know that Ali and the Prophet p had the same paternal grandfather. Hence, it would be reasonable to conclude that father to son descendants of Ali would carry y chromosome genetic markers that will reflect on the y chromosome genetic identity of the Prophet p.
