The 'Did you know?' thread

Post up an interesting fact about science and/or nature.

Don’t know one? Go google one and put it up  Let us begin the knowledge sharing.

I’ll start.

If humans ever develop the technology for deep space travel, it will come from the Irish. The interstellar gas cloud Sagittarius B contains a billion, billion, billion litres of alcohol.

Re: The 'Did you know?' thread

here is what i found

Polar Bears can run at 25 miles an hour and jump over 6 feet in the air.

60-65 million years ago dolphins and humans shared a common ancestor

Butterflies taste with their hind feet, and their taste sensation works on touch – this allows them to determine whether a leaf is edible

There are 62,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body – laid end to end they would circle the earth 2.5 times

Re: The 'Did you know?' thread

Did you know that carrots used to be purple? The mutants forms that were yellow or white were then cross-bred (or whatever the plant terminology is) to make carrots orange. It was mostly because purple carrots gave soups an ugly poopy color.

Yep, that is the ONLY thing I remember from my plants and civilizations class. :D

Re: The ‘Did you know?’ thread

Re: The 'Did you know?' thread

Re: The ‘Did you know?’ thread

Re: The 'Did you know?' thread

KOALAS....
1. Since koala mostly eat eucalyptus leaves, which provide them with the water they need, they do not drink water

  1. A new born koala is less than 1 inch long. It stays in its mother’s pouch the first six months where it nurses.

  2. The word bear was added to their name only because they look like teddy bears! They are not related to the bear family.

  3. Koalas are nocturnal animals. Daytime is their sleep and rest time.

  4. Each front paw has two thumb-like fingers and three other fingers allowing koalas to easily move from tree branch to the next.
