The Delhi gang rape case

Do you think anything will change because of this and lessons will be learned or it will all be forgotten and things will go back to how they were?

Re: The Delhi gang rape case

it has increased the awareness but i don’t think it’ll translate into action…i think the police force is pretty corrupt and indifference to this sort of crime. poor women get the blaim at the end of the day and those culprits walk free with a slap on their wrist. [in this case, i’m positive the culprits will get severe punishment]

Mukhtara Mai didn’t change anything for Pakistan, let’s see if the Indians are any better.

Re: The Delhi gang rape case

As said above, it’ll increase awareness but I’m not overly optimistic about it resulting in dramatic changes. Apart from a corrupt law enforcement, eradicating centuries worth of deep-rooted beliefs that victimize/stigmatize women is a rather arduous task.

Re: The Delhi gang rape case

The western media sounds so optimistic, that the government’s promised to implement this policy, and start this new program etc, and soon women will be respected in India, and like it acting like it’s all westernized, so will the ideologies of it will be all westernized as well. And I just can’t help but think, what a farce that is. India is like any other developing country, full of promises but no action. I keep reading about hotline for reporting rapes, but I also read that such a hotline existed before, and when you call it, no one picks it up. So what’s the point of hiring more and new people on sarkari money? To have them sit there and eat tiffin kay lunches and drink karak chai? And let’s forget about how deep rooted the inequality between men and women in India is. Let’s talk about the caste system, which is probably even more ingrained into the psyches of the people there, than sexism. It’s perfectly ok to rape and possibly murder a low caste girl, because she’s not really human, except when you need to rape her, and in that case she is just reduced to a few organs. A rape case in any normal circumstances might be heard and action might be taken against it, but a rape case in which a low caste girl was raped, would probably never even pass the gates of the police station. Right this moment a Dalit girl is trying to get justice for what happened against her, but she isn’t gaining any media spotlight. Maybe because she wasn’t killed/committed suicide, or maybe because she is a Dalit.

All in all, these are just empty promises. Nothing will be achieved, as sad as that is.

Re: The Delhi gang rape case

**Hey Guys,
First of all a warm Hello to everyone from me, this is my first post on this forum. I am Deepak from India.

On the Delhi Rape case, people have been on the streets for weeks now. Not only in Delhi, but all over India. I must admit that the Media has hyped the case and the politicians are playing the normal Games that they do. Political Parties have announced a compensation of around 50 Lakh rupees to the Family of the Girl.

I am not sure if this would really turn into something serious, as far as amending the laws is concerned As a matter of fact, the main accused, who is 17 years old would be free within a few months and he cannot be tried under the Law for Adults. He would be sent to some juvenile home and soon be free.

The Laws in India need to change, and change quick. I am not saying that Rape should be punishable by death, by the action must be quick. We lack Fast Track Courts. A few of them have come up following this case. What really happens is only to be seen.

I really hope the offenders get what they deserve and the Girl rests in peace.

G’day**
