The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], “This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard.”
[Qur’aan 9:35]
And because of this it has been said: He who loves something and gives it precedence over the obedience of Allah, then he will be punished by means of it.
Thus, when the wealth of these people, which they amassed for themselves, consumed them and took them away from the Pleasure of Allah, they were punished by means of it.
This is like Abu Lahab, may Allah curse him, who strove in hostility to the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and his wife helped him.
On the Day of Judgment she will be a helper in his punishment as well.
Allah says in Surah Al-Masad Verse 4-5
**And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.
Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.**
Meaning that she will gather firewood in the Fire and throw it on him so that it will increase his punishment as it is coming from a person who was most kind to him and helped him in this worldly life in his disbelief and his striving against the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).
Likewise, this wealth which was the most important thing to those who amassed it that they forgot the obedience of Allah and did not spend it in the way of Allah, will become the thing which gives them most harm in the Next World.
It will be heated and their foreheads, backs, and sides will be branded by means of it.
