Me too Khawa, I love tea parties with loads of snacks and desserts too ..
Actually, I love variety in food .. I seriously dont enjoy dawats where hosts just try to sir sai utaro the guests with a basic menu.. I myself make the effort and create a variable menu when guests are over ..
After all thats what a “dawat” is all about , variety of food offered .. if its just a simple menu then its like offering someone a meal time , not a dawat
Variety is definitely more impressive, but I am evolving into a humble person at the moment so I think I enjoy less extravagant menu more now you can actually enjoy what you have with more options you end up just taste checking everything. (don't know how long my simple taste will last...)
i'm not much into eating variety of foods and i would like the host to spend time with people(us guests) n chitchat n be relaxed instead of spending whole day in kitchen, serving people....and specially cleaning up after daawat....
usually when i go to a dawat of option 1 I dont eat everything.....n i help the host in cleaning up:D
BUT if i am hosting a daawat i will keep the guest's perspective in my mind (not mine)....if they r coming to eat n enjoy food...i will host an option 1 daawat.....
i wanted to ask one more question to the ppl abit of twist to this thread. CB u can create another thread for my question if u want to..
do you enjoy the western style of dawat more? where everything is placed at the table and u can serve urself.
or do you enjoy the sunnah way? where we put the 'dastarkhuwan' on the floor with all the dishes etc?
i was thinking to adopt a sunnah way of eating nechey beth k ..but does it look like i m from last century?
I wud agree with KKF (Khidmat e Khalq Foundation :p) bhai ...
1 delicious dish + 1 sweet dish + thanda paani. And if i know the menu before hand, its awesome .. like as KKF bhai said...Kabaab paratha party or biryani ki dawat or haleem ki dawaat.
Few months back .. I gave one at my home to my immediate cousins...there were around 40-55 ppl .. and it was a single dish biryani party with floor sitting arrangement in home. Everyone enjoyed to the brim because the biryani cooked was way way too awesome.
I plan to do a BBQ party in January at home again ...** plan to keep chicken tikka and beef bihari kabaabs for the studs** :p
please remember to post pics of the dishes..............
Alhumdulillah the circle in which we move everyone is too humble and likes to sit on the floor. Moreover we have segregated gathering for men and women. I usually take the dishes for women on the dastarkhwaan as kitchens in western countries are just in front and then i serve for men on the kitchen top from where they take and sit on dastarkhwaan

Personally I dislike the western way of hospitality .. I have been to western parties and unless its a serve yourself kind of gathering, I have never really enjoyed the meal. Coz then you are bound to finish what is in your plate and your choice really is very limited ...
On the other hand, our Sunnah way of presenting food to guests encourages individual attention to the guests .. what ever dish they like and however much they like , they can enjoy it ..
About sitting on the floor .. honestly I tried it a few times, but found it really hard with guests .. though I personally dont mind if someone has the floor setting .. infact I think I kind of enjoy that more ..when there are huge gatherings then you cant place anyone at the table anyways ... but when there are small family dawats .. Table is the most comfortable option coz everyone is dressed up such for example, it can be hard for men to sit on the floor in trousers .. similarly for women in sari's or kaam wala dresses ec
I like 2. I cant taste so many things at the same time on my plate, and I cant take multiple servings. I rather enjoy 1 or 2 dishes, that I do anyways, even if many dishes are there
I’m a little confused, what is the western version of hospitality? Every single davat I’ve been to (canada/US/Pakistan), they put food in serving dishes on the table and you take what you want and put it on your plate…
Also, not to offend anyone, but I hate sitting on the floor. I mean its okay when it’s a casual gathering amongst friends/close family (then I don’t really mind that much), but I really wouldn’t be comfortable doing that if, say, i was at my in laws, or anywhere where I was dressed very nicely and would have a hard time handling both my duputta and balancing my food.
Sara, it might be a british thing then .. coz here when ever we have been invited for non desi parties or get togethers , its either a help yourself style or food is served in individual plates by the host.
If its a help yourself style , I dont mind, coz then you only take the food that you know you will finish.
but if its served on individual plates , then it becomes so embarassing to leave the unwanted food in the plate , host ends up thinking food wasnt good enough
I know what you mean regards not being able to feel comfortable on a floor setting.. most people dont feel very comfortable .. I specially dislike floor setting at some desi households .. people dont give you any leg space what so ever , I hate it when that happens ..
I'm # 1 kind of person. I love it where there is variety and i love doing it too.
When i have a party at home. I make sure there are 2,3 types starters, main dishes and desserts.
Number 2 because I feel some people do option 1 to show that hey look I made so many dishes. I also understand feeling the host didn't put any work into the dawat and made a regular meal - at least according to me number 2 isn't a regular meal. To me regular meal is 1 salan, roti, salad and dessert.
Well sitting on floor is sunnah, even if you dont like atleast dont say you hate it. Although its not the obligatory sunnah but think can you say anything in such disrespectful way for you father or mother, even if you dislike anything of theirs you would be cautious. prophet SAW was the best of best and our prophet about whom ALlah has said that (more or less words) if you want my love follow prophet SAW. Each and every sunnah is respectful if we dont like it then we must try to work on our iman but please refrain associating the words like i hate, its disgusting etc.
