No muslim can disagree with this statement, however in this day and age it is too simplistic a view.
My view is quite the opposite, it is since we have started to force our brands of islam on this nation in a simplistic way without understanding it's true essence, we have got ourselves in this mess. For example before the Mullah Power days of late 70s Pakistan was a very open, tolerant and progressive society. Ever since the mullahs started to ram their respective versions of islam down people's throats we have started to hate each other, Sunni killing Shia, Shia killing Sunni, everyone killing Ahmedis and now the Wahabis killing everyone!!
True but are the scholars the only ones responsible for the mess? Do not the people have an hand in this? The average joe in Pakistan (well just above average) the ones who are educated and have basic understanding of religion, they do not turn to the scholars, then who is to blame? Forget these people, the elites should have more responsibility because they have the resources. But no, they do not turn to the 'mullah', the ones that do are the ignorant uneducated class which is unfortunately a great number in Pakistan.
