The Colour BLACK

When and where did negative connotations associated with the colour black come from?

Black cats, black dogs, black skin, even wearing black (to an extent) :frowning:

Re: The Colour BLACK

How do we know this?

I know I make fun of my local friends for the statue of jesus they make as white.. he could be black too

Re: The Colour BLACK

Is it a colour of mourning in Islam? I mean is there a link there in cultural or religious terms and if so why is black often recommended for everyday hijab if it’s also a colour for mourning? I thought white was sunnah.. read that somewhere..

Re: The Colour BLACK

There was a Vogue-sponsored exhibit at the MET on mourning attire/fashion. It showed how Victorian-era mourning attire, including the colours changed depending on the stage of mourning. (Full-mourning = black and half-mourning = greys and lavenders)

Re: The Colour BLACK

I don’t know, but I would also like to know.

Re: The Colour BLACK

Because Adam means black.

Jesus (AS) was middle-eastern…not white, neither black.

On the other hand, father of mankind Prophet Adam was black. Also, black horses are considered the most expensive and beautiful. Black pearl is more expensive and beautiful than other pearls. And Gandalf wears black.

Umm no, gandalf the Grey becomes gandalf the white.

Re: The Colour BLACK

Because black is the absence of color and we cannot see in the dark. It’s the fear of unknown that made people associate evil with darkness/color black.

Re: The Colour BLACK

its not completely, fear of unkown. Some predators have advantage in the dark. Human lose most essential of their six senses, sight. So its not completely fear of unkown.

Re: The Colour BLACK

And who remembers him as Gandalf the White?

Re: The Colour BLACK

Point was, he was never gandalf the black.

Re: The Colour BLACK

Even if not completely unknown, it is still a huge part of it. I am just explaining why we associate evil with darkness and you are kind of proving my point with this statement. Most evil and illegal acts are carried out in the darkness. You know the phrase “keeping someone in the dark”, it is literally that. Nobody likes to be kept in the dark, not even the predators. Therefore, it’s BAD. It is not the darkness that breeds evil, it’s the evil doers who take advantage of the dark. If you really think about it, for everything that is light, the darkness is at the center of it (blackhole to galaxy, pupil to iris, wick to flame, and so on)

Re: The Colour BLACK

Color of burnt things.
