A Great Conversation

Tell a Friend
A man came to Iyas Ibn Mu’awiyah, a Muslim judge famous for his wisdom, and the following conversation took place between them:

Man: What is the Islamic ruling regarding wine?

Judge: It is Haram (Forbidden).

Man: How about water?

Judge: It is Halal (Permissible).

Man: How about dates and grapes?

Judge: They are Halal.

Man: Why is it that all these ingredients are Halal, and yet when you combine them, they become Haram?

The judge looked at the man and said: If I hit you with this handful of dirt, do you think it would hurt you?

Man: It would not.

Judge: How about if I hit you with this handful of straw?

Man: It would not hurt me.

Judge: How about a handful of water?

Man: It surely would not hurt me.

Judge: How about if I mix them, and let them dry to become a brick, and then hit you with it, would it hurt you?

Man: It would hurt me and might even kill me!

Judge: The same reasoning applies to what you asked me!!

Once, a person was verbally abusing Abu Bakr (RA) while the Prophet (SAW) was curiously watching with a smile. After taking much abuse quietly, Abu Bakr responded to a few of his comments. At this, the Prophet exhibited his disapproval, got up and left. Abu Bakr caught up with the Prophet and wondered, 'O Messenger of Allaah, he was abusing me and you remained sitting. When I responded to him, you disapproved and got up.' The Messenger of Allaah responded,

'There was an angel with you responding to him. When you responded to him, Shaytaan took his place.'

He then said,

'O Abu Bakr, there are three solid truths: If a person is wronged and he forbears it (without seeking revenge) just for the sake of Allaah (SWT), Allaah will honour him and give him the upper hand with His help; if a person opens a door of giving gifts for cementing relationships with relatives, Allaah will give him abundance; and, if a person opens a door of seeking charity for himself to increase his wealth, Allaah will further reduce his wealth.'

The following incident was narrated by a well known preacher of this age known as Colonel Sayed Amir Uddin, currently a Canadian resident. Over 6,000 Non-Muslims have accepted Islam through him.

He narrates: I visited a friend in a hospital who had severe cancer. While I was there, a doctor came and gave him the bad news that he will live for only one more week. Then the doctor left to get some medicines for him. As the doctor was going down the stairs, he slipped and fell down the stairs. He was seriously injured and died on that day. On the other hand, my friend who was suppose to die in one week lived for three more years!

This incident shows that death is unpredictable. Today we hear about hundreds of people dieing around us but Satan tells you and me that let them die, you have a long way to go.

Once there lived a very pious elderly lady named Fiddah. She was kind and generous and always remembered Allah (SWT). One day Shaikh Abu-ar-Rabie (RA) went to her village. He had been told that she had a goat that gave both milk and honey. He bought a new bowl and went to see the goat. When he got there, he was shown the goat and he milked it. Sure enough, sweet white milk came gushing out. Shaikh Abu-ar-Rabie (RA) drank to his fill and then he asked they got the goat. She narrated to him an amazing story.

She said, "There was a time when we were very poor and had nothing but a she-goat. When Eid-ul-Adha came around, my husband suggested that we sacrifice the goat and have a feast. The she-goat was our only means of sustenance so I reminded my husband that Allah has not made it necessary for us to sacrifice an animal under such circumstances. Therefore, we spared the goat till the next Eid-ul-Adha. As chance would have it, we had a guest on that very same day. Since Allah has commanded us to entertain our guests, I asked my husband if he would now slaughter the animal and I would cook its meat for our guests. My husband took the goat outside behind a wall, lest the children should cry on seeing it killed. A little while later another goat appeared bearing an exact resemblance to our own. By Allah! This was a blessing. A miraculous she-goat that yields both milk and honey was sent down to us as recompense for feeding our guests."

Lady Fiddah often reminded her children that the goat feeds on what grows in their hearts. "So long as your hearts continue to be noble and un-tarnished by evil, its milk will remain good and sweet, but as soon as your hearts become false, its milk will also turn bad. Guard your hearts against evil and Allah SWT will make everything beneficial for you."

"(The unbelievers' state) is like a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with waves, one over the other, and above it is a cloud of darkness upon darkness, one above another; if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it; For anyone to whom Allah gives no light, there is no light." Al Quran, Surah An-Noor ( 24:40)

Gary Miller in his book, "The Amazing Quran" stated the following story: A Muslim gave a copy of the Holy Quran to a man who was a merchant marine. This man knew nothing about the history of Islam. When he finished reading the Holy Quran, he asked his Muslim friend: "This man Muhammad RasulAllah (SAW), was he a sailor? When he was told that Muhammad RasulAllah (SAW) lived in a desert and probably did not even see an ocean during his whole life, he embraced Islam on the spot. He acknowledged that this description of the Holy Quran could only be described by one who had actually seen sea storms many times, whereas Muhammad RasulAllah (SAW) never witnessed this phenomenon.

Once Bayazid Bustami (a renowned pious individual) was going on a journey when a Christian accompanied him along. When it was time for mid-day meal, Bayazid suggested to his companion that he should go to the village at hand and have food. The Christian said, "No, Bayazid you are a godly person. Pray to God that He may furnish the food here."

Bayazid offered two units of Nawafil in prayer and begged of Allah, "My Lord! This man wants to test my religion. Please, protect its good name so that I may not be put to shame. Kindly arrange for our food." He had hardly finished his prayer when a person appeared with four loaves of bread and some curry. Both of them ate to their fill and resumed their journey.

In the evening the Christian companion said that he would arrange for the supper. He also reaised his hands in prayers and at once appeared a man with eight loaves of bread and double quantity of curry. Bayazid was wonder-struck and asked him what he had prayed for. The Christian replied that first he should be converted to Islam and then he would disclose the detail of the prayer. At this, Bayazid converted him to Islam.

The companion related that he had prayed like this: "O Lord! If Islam is a true religion and you are kind to Bayazid, provide us with the double quantity of food that we had at midday. So the response to my prayer is obvious."

A brother was asked to give advice to some people in a gathering. He said the following things about being punctual in offering Salah (prayer). He asked us if any day passed by when we were so busy with work that we couldn't attend the call of nature (urinate, excrete etc). All of us replied to the negative because we all had to relieve ourselves no matter how busy we were. So, he said that in the same manner, no day should pass by where we couldn't offer salah because of being busy. Indeed, salah is more necessary for us than relieving ourselves. May Allah give all of us the ability to offer salah in all conditions. Ameen.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:

The Prophet collected every two martyrs of Uhud (in one grave) and then he would ask, "Which of them knew the Quran more?" And if one of them was pointed out for him as having more knowledge, he would put him first in the Lahd. The Prophet said, "I will be a witness on these on the Day of Resurrection." Then he ordered them to be buried with their blood on their bodies and he did not have them washed.

At the time of Rasulullah (SAW), people were honoured according to the knowledge of Islam but sadly today, people are honoured according to the knowledge of this material world.

May Allah give us the ability to appreciate those who excell in the knowledge of Islam

In a Masjid of France, a Shaikh turned to see only a few people who were present for Fajr Salah. Then he gave a short talk to remind them to be dutiful to their Lord. When talking about the current condition of the Muslim Ummah, he broke into tears and said the following words: The Muslims have become the toilets of Satan. Someone from the gathering asked the Shaikh to explain what he has just said. Then the Shaikh narrated the following hadith from Bukhari that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about a man who sleeps until the morning comes, that is, after the time of the dawn prayer. He said, "That is a man whom Satan has urinated into his two ears."

Once a Muslim scholar was flying to a country with an airplane. When the time for salah came, he went to the bathroom to make wudhu (ablution). Since, the bathrooms in airplanes are very small, he had to open the door to lift up his foot to the sink. An air hostess came to him and told him not to wash his feet in the sink because they are dirty. The scholar calmly asked the hostess "How many times do you wash your face?" The hostess replied "Usually once or twice." Then the scholar replied "I wash my feet five times a day for prayers. Therefore, my feet are cleaner than your face."

The purpose of this story is not to get a good laugh. However, it teaches us how regular we should be about prayers. It also shows us how to deal with non Muslim comments regarding wudhu.

Allah's pure name

The following is a miraculous story which shows that Islam is the only true religion. I personally met this individual who experienced this incident. The event took place in the 1960s.

He said the following: I was living in a town where everyone was against Islam. My family was against Islam, my friends were against Islam, the Church that I went to was also against Islam. Once in a while, the priest in the Church used to give out articles which were against Islam. One day, the priest gave out an article which was against Allah. As I was reading the article, suddenly I saw that the word "Allah" is getting unusually large and covering the whole page. This happened couple of times as I tried to read the article. Though I didn't know how to become a Muslim at that spot, but my heart believed that Allah is the true God. Later, I found some Muslim brothers involved in the dawah who came from Pakistan. I joined them and learned how to become a Muslim and what to do afterwards. I do not consider this a miracle, but what is a real miracle is that Allah gave me Islam out of a place where my family was against Islam, my friends were against Islam, the Church was against Islam and the books I read were against Islam.

After 40 years have passed, this brother is still a practising Muslim and have been a means for guidance of many people.

Today, we had the opportunity to talk with a brother who turned towards Allah just 13 days ago. He was saying that: Look at a car. After few years of driving you have to change the tires. But look at your feet, all your life you walk with them but don't need to keep changing them. Then look at the joints of machines. If they are not regularly lubricated using chemicals, then you will hear annoying scratching sounds coming out of them. But look your joints in the body, we never lubricate them yet they function perfectly without making any scratching sounds. These are indeed the signs of Allah.

"Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth and (in) the difference of night and day are signs (of His Sovereignty) for men of understanding..." Surah Al Imran verse 190.
