What do you think is a better choice longer term , in home decoration :
1- Vases?
2- Candles and candle holders ?
3- Rugs?
or any others …please mention .. I am so confused in what to invest in … I have different color themes going around the home … and eventually i want to buy something that will fit in other themes once we get bored of it in a particular room …
what do you guys suggest ?

Rugs, I'm not a great fan - it has to be something really out of the ordinary for it to appeal.
A mix of vases and candles sounds nice. I don't really know what to suggest, what way does your taste run, classic, modernist, antiques, something else?

Definitely modern … I have very bright color themes in various rooms in the home .. someone suggested me that go for the candles , coz you can always change them when you get bored of the scheme …
but my heart gets pulled towards the beautiful flowers and vases 
… though thats an expensive option … you cant change your vases every two years … plus you got to save them from guest kids everytime you have a family visiting :no:

See with candles, I can't use them just for display - always end up lighting them. The plus is though that there is a heck of a lot of choice out there, and some really innovative holders too.
Maybe a compromise is in order, one or two vases?
For other things, photography/artwork?
Most of our decorations are bits and pieces that we have picked up on our various travels. But I suppose those things don't always go well in a sleek modernist space.
Ha, I don't envy you the task of shopping; after a while of browsing, everything starts to look the same.

yeah everything is indeed looking the same ! 
.. I keep changing my mind though about stuff .. I really like your idea of going for some photography or artwork .. coz they can changed as well specially that you dont need too many of them , just one or two good ones can create a dramatic impact on a room

i bought one rug for our main bedroom which my hubby wanted for ages, its sheep skin and pretty expensive. that was his b'day present as well as something which went with the theme of the bed-room :D
I've bought a couple of different candles as well as invested in a couple of vases! anything i liked and it went with the colour scheme of the room; i bought. its only a 2-bedroom flat, therefore couldn't buy as much as i would've liked :D .. most stuff is in the living room or main bed-room. Just one vase in the kitchen with goes with the tiles and 1 vase in the spare bed-room with a matching glass thing that goes around the roof light (not a chandelier, more in a square shape?).

i still have to buy some art work though for the bare walls, they have some gorgeous 3-d sorta art work available now, not just boring old paintings :D .. pretty expensive though!!

Ive played around with vases enough
I would invest in very creative artwork - not to hang on your wall necessarily - but sculptures or interesting creations
A rug that shows your style and gives the entire room its energy is what I would invest in

Reha , I like the skuplture idea … they are so expensive though :no: … I am not wanting to invest heavily at the moment .. coz i do get bored pretty quickly .. so I need something which wont look too common , yet will bring the modern touch to the living room
