Its easy to answer the question with gilly, But look at Kumar Sangakkara he is a great batsman, And a good keeper behind the wicket… u would have to be kinda good TO keep against murali…
Gilchrist is an above average keeper. Not an exception. It is his batting ability that keeps him above all wicket-keepers. Saem goes for Kumar SangaKara; If he is the best SL keeper around , they wouldnt have picked Kaluwitharna over and over again.
In My opinion, best wicketkeeper (in wicket keeping ability alone) is Tatenda Taibu of Zim with Mark Boucher coming close.
I agree with Saby, Gilchrist is not BEST "keeper", he only rises due to his "batting" skills. Just like comparing Moin with Rashid people tend to praise Moin because of his batting heroics. Gilchrist is not that great a keeper, simply a great opener who also happens to be a keeper.
Let's see. Boucher, Sangakkara, Mashud, Patel are all sloppy. The West Indians keep changing their keepers. Akmal can't be judged at this point. Taibu is fine, but he has too much pressure on him these days. That only leaves Gilchrist and a very underrated McCullum. Gilchrist is very safe with the gloves. McCullum in my opinion is very underrated. Along with being a safe keeper, he is a really good batsman and a real fighting cricketer. However, the top spot will easily go to Gilchrist and anyone doubting that should keep quiet and stop praising keepers like Mashud and Boucher who miss sitters occasionally :biggthumb .
^^ gilchrist isnt too much better either. he's just an above average kinda keeper. unfortunately i havent seen too mcuh of taibu to say nething. and akmal can be rated he has now played some intl. cricket. its not like he is just a couple of matches old. keeping is not like batting or bowling. its just ur natural ability, either u have it or u dont. in fact i think akmal is the best pure keeper in the game right now. and IA he will prove that in the near future. i'm glad that an australian commentator ian chappel ] said something similar in the vb series finals.
No he didn’t. Ian Chappell did not say that. A lot of people have misunderstood his comment. He was just mentioning that he has been good in this series, which I do agree with. And no, you cannot rate Akmal right now. If you look at Boucher’s career, he was simply brilliant in the first half of his career so far. In the second half, he got sloppy and missed chances quite regularly. Just like Moin was a relatively better keeper in the second half of his career than the first half(Trust me!). Atleast I can’t judge Akmal until he has played a few more matches. Gilchrist is still the most consistent keeper out of the lot(Not to mention, a beast with the bat).
No, Ian Chappell is not misunderstood by any means. In the final preliminary round match against windies after Sarwan’s stumping, Ian chappell specifically said that Akmal is the best keeper in int’l cricket right now. Not that I agree with him but its an honour for Akmal that such respected cricket scholars are mentioning him such.
p.s Those who have seen Akmal’s younger brother Adnan Akmal keep the wickets have other opinions. Bob Woolmer wanted Adnan to be brought in for a onedayer when Moin khan was injured and selectors sent Kamran. Bob played Younis Khan instead
