as long as this does not involve a shamiana blocking my street and tone deaf maluvis doing a capellas all night, I am okay with wherever you are and whatever path you took and whoever you met along the way a al ihsan and iman and islam and other hazraat.
salafied, barelvied, hanafied, minds..what are they? why do they even matter.
different ppl can show their devotion to the prophet in different ways and thats all cool. I have no issue with someone believing that the prophet's sweat smelled like perfume, nor do I have a beef with someone who does not attribute such characteristics to him. and it has nothing to do with durood...is my durood less or more importanr or valid if i think his sweat was like perfume or not? and if it is not then it is immaterial. and thus going around in circles about it is immaterial.
There are few things regarding devotion that bother me, and those are the ones where ppl chose to exercise their devotion in a way that impacts my life..have not experienced any in ages, the after sehri amateur hour with naat at one local masjid in karachi was one such example. all night eid milad un nabi sessions blocking roads and with loudspeakers were another...its like dude...u guys want to get in a tent and sing and dance and whatever with the mini-mes with patakhas and all outside..thats fine...can u just do it in a tent and not use loudspeakers and mics. other than that I really dont care what someone chooses to believe as long as it is not hurting others.
Peace X2,
I agree with you that the effect of durood won't going be less or more whether one agree or not on that the Prophet's PBUH sweat smelled like perfume or not. It is like one say to another that 'your mother is nice person which make him or her feel happy. If it is not said at all than thats fine too but when someone says 'oh your mother is a bad person' than this will leave a negative impression and ofcourse one will defend his or her mother even though its just a simple word let say two pplz are talking separately but still one get mad or feel unhappy with such remarks. Peoples get into fight/defense if someone said "Is this place belongs to your father". There is no physically abuse/harm these are just some words which uttered but may cause some serious result.
I hope u understand what i'm trying to say. That is why it said; that person can't be 'Momin' till he loves me more than anything".
About blocking the roads, shamiyana, patakha etc., I'm against that.

If one is going to share his views then one has to be prepared to have the recipient disagree, in varying manners, and not take it personally.
to take your mother analogy further, two siblings can show their love for their mother in different ways
Just for completeness I want to post the references here:
Anas bin Malik reported that his mother, Umm Salaim would take Mohammed’s sweat and put it in a bottle to be used to make a most fragrant perfume. (*Sahih Muslim vol.4:5761 (p.1247). The next hadith, 5762 said that Mohammed asked what she was doing. When she explained, he said, "You have done something right." The next hadith, 5763 said the Umm Salaim would put down a cloth that Mohammed could take a nap on to collect the sweat on the cloth.
His body gave off a special coolness or fragrance, as of a scent bag of a perfumer, according to *Sahih Muslim vol.4:5758 (p.1247). Also he had fragrant skin in*al-Tabari vol.6 p.80. Mohammed was the most handsome person they had seen, according to *Sahih Muslim vol.4:5770-5772,5777 (p.1249)**

This is true ... one child may obey the mother but never praise her, the other may praise her but never obey her ... the former in this case is better ...
But if there was a third child ... one who both praised his mother and obeyed her ... surely this child would be the most excellent.
so where does this end now if i start getting more graphic and more detailed about smell and texture of other bodily functions at what point would I be considered a blasphemer and not a more devout person.

if he praised her by saying she could fly, that would be irrelevent in how excellent he is...

At the point when you say things from the whim and not from a reference ... most probably

Thanks for sharing your source, I have no reason to accept or doubt it. I believe everything in those books should be taken with a grain of salt, and vast majority of them do nothing to change the basic requirements of faith. whether the sweat smelled like perfume does not change what is asked of us. as i noted in the thread about the age of hazrat ayesha, and that I find the sources, transmissions and accuracy suspect, i apply that across the board. and frankly those that are immaterial to what I consider faith .... like the ones about her age, or his sweat smell, i ignore.
if all of us agreed that it did smell like perfume, then we will argue about how strong it was or what the aroma smelled like more..etc etc.

there are more important things to focus on..
Agreed there are more important things to agree on ... I guess we can all say that it is important "to love Muhammad (SAW) more than anyone, even ourselves" and how we choose to interpret that is subject to our sincerity, knowledge and tawfiq from Allah (SWT).
About body musk and all, when my dad passed away, I had one of his shirt that he probably wore within last few days and was never washed. I kept it as it is with me because the smell reminded me of my dad. These are all human emotions which are real and emerge out of love. There is no doubt that Sahaba used to love prophet more than any wordly thing in the world, so its no wonder that they used to collect his body musk in bottles and nap cloth.
But making it part of your eeman is a very dangerous thing.
My question is very simple. If prophet had every physical aspect that we believe in (no shadow, sweat smelling as perfume, bright light emerging from face) but he was not a messenger, would we have the same love for him? The point is, we should love him for the message he brought to us cause rest could be debatable.
I disagree, the biggest issues are getting stuck in different interpretations of ritual and dogma and claiming is as the one and only true interpretation regardless of how outlandish it may seem. the essence of the faith is lost, the rights of the people are forgotten, haqooq al ibaad is nowhere in sight, kindness to even animals is not seen. The self declared guardians and standard bearers of the faith are not the best of us, they are by far the worst of us,... bigoted, prejudiced, small minded, blinder wearing, illiterate, uncouth, overbearing, out of touch, uncaring, foul tempered, hate filled thugs that roam around in garb and grooming that they think makes them emulate the prophet..and are the first to destroy property, declare others as non muslims, be disparaging towards minorities, be force behind nonsense rules like blasphemy laws, and ridiculous hudood type laws.....we have forgotten the love of learning....of ilm, of the science and the arts...of literature and of exploration. differing in views about personal characteristics of the prophet or ways to show reverence or respect to him are very low on the list of issues.
1) Who brought us complete and final message of Allah in the form of Quran and his example
2) He is the teacher who taught us etiquettes and manners regarding every aspect of life
- How to eat
- How to behave when you go meet someone
- How to fight a war etc.
3) Beautiful morals when interacting relatives, strangers and even enemies
and so many other things ..
Sometimes I feel that people emphasize on the super-natural, miraculous attributes more to shirk the responsibility of following his high morals and mannerism. Actually, I came in contact with such persons who were misbehaving and quoting prophet (pbuh) left and right. When I said, 'your behavior is not in congruence to the sunnah of the prophet (pbuh) and his response was. 'Well, he was a prophet ....'. Sometimes, that role model is deemed as God and sometimes he is seen as above human and all this is done to put some sort of a barrier between them and him to provide them with a justification of avoiding need of following in the real sense.
Some people lay more emphasis on copying his(pbuh) appearance, his dress etc. One day as I was watching a tv program, a lady was sayng that muslims with beard are victimized and mocked at especially in the western world. yes this may be true but I think when anyone keeps beard, wear cap etc. in love of the prophet (pbuh), he actually carries a great responsibility on his shoulder. It is like roaming around wearing a conspicuous badge of Pakistan. If you do good things, Pakistanis are praised and if you do something bad then Pakistan gets cursed at. When a muslim copies physical attributes/dress of the prophet(pbuh), in my view, he is seen as the one who loves the prophet(pbuh) so much that even these peripheral aspects are important to him and he must have already been following the morals and values the prophet (pbuh) stood for. So if this person utter lies, shows dishonesty, or do any untoward act, he actually tarnishes the holy name of his role model.
Holy Prophet pbuh was NOT able to see behind His back. His sweat did NOT smell like perfume. He pbuh was the best of creation, without any doubt. He pbuh is sent as a mercy for the entire universe. In His character and personality are morals for the whole mankind. He s.a.w is superior to every prophet sent by Allah. That being said, He s.a.w was a man like us. He walked in markets, He ate, slept, went to washroom, breathe, drank like us. Attributing unrealistic qualities to Muhammad PBUH is being very far away from Islam.
Muhammad PBUH came to this world to bring the love of tawheed and oneness of Allah and to spread the true teachings of Allah. That was his mission. Although, His love should always be in our hearts, but we should never forget the reason of His coming. It was to put the love of Allah in our hearts.
There was an instance most probably at the time of battle of ohad, when Muslims got defeated by kuffars. Prophet of Allah pbuh along with some of His companions hid in one of the cave. Kuffars came close to that cave, not knowing they were inside and said their names out loud and asked them to speak up if they're still alive. Prophet Muhammad PBUH commanded all the companions present with him at that time to not speak. Once kuffar were done naming those companions of RasulAllah s.a.w, they said out loud ' hail to hubl (one of their gods).. Prophet Muhammad PBUH disturbingly told the companions.. why dont you say anything ???? Companions said, ya rasulAllah you told us not to say anything. RasulAllah said, before it was about me and you personally, but now they have said that victory to Hubl, now speak up and say it out loud ALLAH HU AKBAR !
I can get a reference of this if anyone needs it. Point is in that hadith, we should be more mindful about the duties towards Allah, and should know what Muhammad PBUH expects from us rather than praising him with stuff which is not true and serves no purpose. Although, no one should disrespect Holy Prophet PBUH, but even more than that, no one should disrespect Islam and Allah himself.
