Havn’t read the book. But have read this from the internet and some books that the connection of insulin and leptin levels and belly fat are interlinked. IN very layman terms… You see insulin is a protein hormone that is released in response to carbs in the bloodstream. While leptin is also a protein hormone but it’s like a satiety hormone. It controls appetite and metabolism. Leptin hormone when released tells the brain to cease eating, that the body is full and no more fat is needed. Thus more leptin…means appetite full…less eating…

It’s when you eat a lot and then insulin is released more…that’s when insulin resistance starts to develop. ANd insulin resistance leads to disturbed levels of LEPTIN hormone…which in turn means that the signals to the brain are all bezerk…and thus brain doesnt get the message to stop eating. You feel hungry more..and turn to fatty foods to curb your appetite. And insulin resistance is a cause for many other diseases like PCO’s and diabetes and heart diseases due to increased fat levels in blood.

So not just controlling sugar…but controlling the total amount of carbs is healthier.
