The Arabs..and differences

Often ppl talk about arabs as one entity, but the fact is that there are differences, the basic language that they share may be the same, albeit with varying dialects, and the cultures may have many similarities, but te countries and the people have their own unique cultural identities.

For those who can compare and contrast the differences, please inform the rest of the ppl.

I would like to have a similar thread about latin americans at some poin.

Re: Re: The Arabs..and differences

Why do arabs keep coming back to this noards with new nicks every time they get banned for acting up and cursing ppl out?

The intent behind this thread was for people to learn more about the arabs and the differences between arabic speaking people in UAE vs those in Libya.

If you cant contribute, dont do so. but then dont complain that people stereotype arabs..here is a perfect opportunity to understand more about the diff cultures of diff countries.

You know Fraudia, I was thinking about the same thing when I read that other thread about wedding, and then this thread popped up infront of me, as if it read my mind! There are so many Arab countries, and I wonder how they feel when we generalize them into one entity. I mean people do that to Indians and Pakistanis too, and I know some people who get ticked off because of this.

Of course there are differences…We have different Pakistanis like Balochis, Mahajirs, Patthans, Sindhis, Punjabis and not to mention sub-forms and sub-sub-forms of Pakis…All in the same country…Just to define Pakis in one post is a daunting task so you can imagine trying to explain the Arabs in one…It’ll take about ten full posts just to start…:flower1:

In "Arabic" differences,

Saudis pronounce nuktay wali kaaf (Qaf) as "gaaf"

Egyptians pronounce "jeem" as "gaaf"... for them Jeddah is "Giddah"
Egyptians pronounce nuktay wali kaaf as "alif"

Egyptian "thob" is different from Saudi, their sleeves are wider at the opening (near wrist).

Is that kind of difference you are looking at? or other cultural aspects i.e. social gatherings etc.?

well i know this much the dialects are different.. e.g. the shoo is used in UAE for 'what' .. i doubt if other Arabic dialects use it.. Egyptian arabic is different and again i hear the Yemeni Arabic is the one more closest to the dialects used in the Qur'an..

It definitely is a big world and widely misunderstood.. but then again you don't find many 'ambassadors' from Arab lands eveywhere like you do with India or Pakistan.

Thanks for the posts guys, interesting facts. my kuwaiti pals in college used to tell me that even the head-dress Gotra or whatever it is called in diff countries is worn differently, they can tell a person's country simply by looking at the head-dress. I suppose it is kinda like pagris in pakistan, diff areas have diff styles.

u can tell a person apart by many things....

the arabic pronounciation is different in almost all countries....
the gulf conutries almost use the same pronounciation....
but there too, the words in use r different....

the head dress and even the thob itself is different....
minor differences....
omanis wear the caps like baluchis....
emirates ppl have this special type of thob....
bahrainis wear thos which has a stitch in the centre....
and two pieces on the sides....
saudis wear it without the stitch....
qataris r difficult to tell by dress....
but then there beard makes it obvious....

and then the dishes r different too....

anyway, 90% of the times u can tell the origin of the person (arab) by looking or talking to him....
