LAHORE: Devotees started a three-day celebration on Thursday in Lahore, for the 971st death anniversary of Sufi Saint Syed Ali bin Osman Al-Hajvery popularly known as Data Ganj Bakhsh.
Thousands of people travel from all over Pakistan to attend celebrations at the shrine of Data Ganj Bakhsh, during the annual religious festival.
Data Ganj Bakhsh was a Persian Sufi scholar during the 11th century. He was born in Ghazni, Afghanistan in 990 AD during the Ghaznavid Empire and settled and died in Lahore, spreading Islam in South Asia.
During the festival the shrine is lit up with candles and lights, donated food is prepared for the people and Sufis dance and play music for hours.

In festivals of rural areas, we still see a lot of healthy activities and real entertainment like kabaddi ,kushtis, aseel cock fight and dog fight etc
Well sufism itself does not promote sutte etc but it has something to do with sufism culture observed at shrines. Sufis while sitting inside the mazar dont preach their followers to stay away from these unhealthy activities. they just want the gatherings and money where people take charss to take pride in dhamal etc.
Another factor is poverty and easy access of charss which has increased the consumption exponentially.

so true. while we are at it, I just want to confirm a thing about Waris Shah I read yesterday. I read that till 1970s there were no shrines of Waris Shah and Bulleh Shah till 1970s and once a Punjabi poetess who visited Warish Shah grave after rain and saw the grave inundated in water said 'Way Warisa tu inna Lawaris hi'. This news reached Hanif Ramay and it was during his CMship that shrine / dargah of Warish Shah and Bulleh Shah were made. Why there was no such shrines of these famous poets. Like as far as I remember Shah Latif tomb was made within a decade of his deat by KalhoRa rulers.
^ I think the reason is, type of poetry of Bulleh shah and Waris shah. Bulleh shah got a lot of criticism from religious circles even during early days of his departure. Now I see some religious circle from brelvis and pro-brelvi deobandi sufis have accepted him as respectable sufi. And waris shah is known for romanticism in his poetry. Although waris wrote a lot for culture as well but the poetry of both these poets was not actually religious. And even if it was religious, it was far less religious than the poetry came from Shah Hussain, Mian Muhammad Bux or Khawja Ghulam Farid.
Another important point is, other poets were peer first then poet which was not the case for bulleh shah and waris shah.
And I dont know much about shah latif's background, what was his religious influence?

That mean there was no gaddi and gaddi nasheen for Waris Shah and Bulleh Shah. But I'm still unclear with one aspect. Even at the time of partition, Waris Shah had a following among Muslims as well as non-Muslims (testimony being Amarta Pritam's famous poem - aj aakhaN waris shah nu), but after all this acknowledgment there was no waris for his grave. The case seems to me similar to Ghalib, whose tomb was built afte partition and that too due to interest of a bollywood producer who produced movie Ghalib (waise aap ne Ghalib movie dekhi hai?).
About Shah Latif, there is still an undecided debate among Sindhi literary circles to consider him Peer and kani karamati sufi. Some people tend to attach karamaat with him and other say that considering him typical peer degrade his message. But as far as I know, there is no gaddi nashin type thing for Shah Latif, though, there are Shah Latif's faqir from his life who take care of his dargah and conduct weekly Raga session at his tombs.

with the passage of time, people start taking those personalities respectable they had no regard for during their life. After their death, literature is written for them, people read about them in details, get inspired, create groups for their cause and some people from those groups turn out to be adherents.
