History, we are often told, began with the invention of writing by the “historic” civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt some 5,000 years ago. However, the development of writing seems to have taken place over a period of several hundred years- roughly between 3300 and 3000 B.C, with Mesopotamia in the lead- after the new societies were past their first stage. Thus “history” was well under way by the time writing could be used to record events.
