Hey,
wel all know that designers in pak charge high fees (albeit much less than getting the exact same thing made in europe).
what i am wondering is that how much of this profit they make gets thru to workers in terms of higher wages. One would hope that they pay them more than the usual 5000-15000 rupees per month that I’m sure the ‘kaam-walas’ and dyers and stitchers in the bazaars get.
You would also hope that their working conditions would be better with more proper hours and air-conditioning etc.
what do u guys think? have you ever been to a designers atelier (kar-ghana) and seen what it is like?
Re: The amount fashion designers pay their workers
honestly, they work in inhumane conditions. shockingly, they dont have enough light to see, let alone, airconditioning. the roofs are not even tall enough for these people to stand up.
Re: The amount fashion designers pay their workers
is this personal experience you have seen from a particular designer? i remember seeing a pic of bunto kazmi's somewhere, her atelier seemed to be a comfortable place for the workers. i have been to munib nawaz's and it was ok. it was located as part of his studio but yes it was cramped............and no generator when the lighting when out! i couldn't believe it. i had an appointment to get clothes made and there was no light. plus he had his friends hanging out with him while i had my appointment (pretty unprofessional).
i hear female designers are much better to work with in person, although ismail farid is a great menswear designer to work with.
i have seen a doco about the chanel atelier............it is just like an ordinary factory with normal old woman doing all the work. at the end of each season they get a special party where karl lagerfeld turns up for like 10 mins. u can catch the doco on youtube, search for chanel haute couture
Re: The amount fashion designers pay their workers
when my sister was getting married last year, we went to the home-shops of many a designers in karachi. you will be amazed at what conditions the workers work in and how much adavantage the designers take of those poor skilled workers and give them little back.
Re: The amount fashion designers pay their workers
I would expect the more established designers out there who work in a particular niche must pay there workers well. The likes of Bunto Kazmi, Faiza Samee and Rizwan Beyg depend on their workers to produce those fantastic garments they sell to their clients. The expertise is not readily available on the market. I've noticed that these kaam wala's tend to be quite old most of the time and have been with the designers that I spoke of for a long time.
