the advantages of breastfeeding for the mother

What’s Good for Baby, is Good for Mom
Nursing your baby obviously benefits his health. But what about yours? There are several reasons why, as a mother, you should take advantage of the many pluses of breast feeding.

Physical health. Nursing helps your uterus contract back to normal size.

A healthy self image. For many women, nursing helps them lose their “baby” fat.

Emotional health. Nursing brings you closer to your baby. Because nursing gives you lots of cuddling time with your child,
it can help you gain confidence as a parent.

Financial health. Nursing is cheaper than formula.

Stress and health. Breast milk is much easier to prepare than formula.

and....
Benefits for the Mother from breastfeeding:

bonds mother and child
provides the mother hormonal induced contentment
encourages efficient uterine contractions after childbirth
allows mothers to lose pregnancy weight and size faster
is convenient
the milk is pre-warmed, clean and always available
is cost effective and saves money
contributes to natural family planning
contributes to household food security
fosters confidence and promotes self-esteem
reduces the incidence of urinary tract infections
is protective against cancer (breast, ovarian, cervical)
lowers the incidence of chronic hepatitis
reduces the incidence of osteoporosis
reduces the requirements of insulin for lactating diabetic mothers Benefits for the community
Additionally breastfeeding:

results in less environmental waste and pollution
frees up health resources
saves money for hospitals and health clinics
may decrease spending on imports.
and more....

for the child,

Increases intelligence...yes, studies have shown in sibling compariosn those that were fed breast milk had 8 pts higher intelligence
lower risk for disease/illness
lower risk for being obese as an adult..and the list goes on...

Maybe it would be interesting to see the other side of the argument and have some disadvantages of breastfeeding/advantages of bottle feeding.

One thing I notice is that mothers who can't or don't breastfeed are sometimes made to feel indifferent for bottle feeding their babies.

Yuck Yuck Yuck
ewwwwwwwwww everytime I come across the word breastfeeding I have this icky yucky feeling creep all over me.
How can women do it.
UGH

Okay so we've gone from one extreme to the other it seems........not a big fan of breastfeeding I take it then Anchal?

Y U C K is all I can say
Down to being honest its like a parasite stuck to you sucking the life outta you and I dont like that feeling
Sore breasts, cracked nipples. dripping milk
God too much trouble

whats wrong with bottle and formula hain.

Actually nothing is wrong with Bottle and Formula It is up to the woman. Choice is a wonderful thing..a bit liberating.

yes all that is great, but then it gets difficult for the baby to let go of that milk

like my lil sister, my mum nurses her but now my lil sista can't let go of that milk and won't even touch the bottles, she hates the regular milk and refuses to drink it

and my mum she's been getting sick lately and because she had an operation and also her back problem, she has to take so many medicines and she can't cuz of my lil sister

and also once or twice when my mum did take the medicines it affected my lil sista n she got really sick..so that definetly is the problem and plus when my mum don't have enuff milk my sister stays hungry...but Mashallah now she's kinda getting used to eating other things too but still at the end of the day she still wants to drink the milk

so i mean there's advantages n disadvantages too...

like i said..fed Breast milk is differant then saying only breast fed... You can be bottle fed breast milk..
There's alot wrong with Formula...do alittle research and you'll discover there's more and more research showing the problems formula fed people are having later in life...

Have also heard that breastfeeding results in "sagging."

But it does aid in bringing the uterus and hips back to normal size.

Nothing wrong with having warm knees.

I'm a formula fed baby and I am a healthy individual. I don't think there are any disadvantages to it.

A funny anecdote –

When my mom had me she was told that if you breastfeed you can’t get pregnant (again, I really think we need to improve education about this stuff  ). Anyway, so she wasn’t “careful” during that time (okay, I don’t want to think about this anymore), and lo and behold, I have a brother that’s a year younger than I am.

Just remember, breastfeeding is not a form of birth control. :dixsi:

What about shifting the perspective...

Not bottle feeding is normal but breastfeeding is better

BUT

Breastfeeding is normal and bottle feeding is...

less healthy for moms
less healthy for kids
more expensive
more wasteful
etc.

After all, Mother Nature made sure that children got the nutrients they need to grow in such a way as to realize their full potential.

Breast milk contains all the nutrients a child needs to develop in every sense - immunological, neurological, motor skills. digestive tract, etc etc etc..... It's pretty logical when you think of it. Everything there, genetically matched, every element in the right proportion with respect to other elements it needs. Very little to bother about eliminating the excess.

There are a great many books and sites aboiut all aspects of breastfeeding for those who want more information.

One of the important discoveries of recent years is that breastfeeding problems are not usually caused by lack of milk but by lack of information and support. Support groups can offer this to mothers throught books, telephone help and meetings.

One very well known group which exists n the US and many other countries is La Leche League www.lalecheleague.org - you can get an enormous amout of info from their website.

Pregnancy is responsible for "sagging" because it causes an increase in breast size.
Not breastfeeing or abrupt weaning can cause mastitis/engorgement which can also cause the skin to stretch and thus cause sagging.

Breastfeeding causes the release of oxytocin which helps in contracting muscles and thus bringing the uterus back to it original dimensions.

Modern science has given this phenomenen a name: Breastfeeding Amenorrea

Breastfeeding suppresses ovulation. But it depends how you breast feed.

generally the research says that if you breastfeed

at least 6 times a day
at least 30 minutes per time
no interval greater than 5 hrs
no bottles or pacifiers
no solid food
baby smaller than 6 months

then breastfeeding offers you a 98% chance of not getting pregnant- about the same as the contraceptive pill.

But if you miss just one of these conditions you aren’t protected.

If you want more info just do an internet search using the words “Lactational Amenorrea”

Whoa… are you REALLY still living in the 80s?

Recent scientific evidence is suggesting that the choice is an illusion - breast milk appears to be considerably better for children than bottle and formula.

To give just one example, breast milk contains antibodies generated by the mother that deal with the latest strains of bacteria to have entered her body - and given the proximity of mother and baby, bacteria likely to infect the mother are likely to infect the baby too.

A baby fed on bottle and formula milk will be much more likely to suffer from the bacteria than a breast fed baby, who would get the antibodies to neutralise the bacteria.

Nursing your infant is truly the best thing you can do for them. I nursed all 3 of my boys as long as I could and it was a little bit of a heartbreak when I lost my milk and had to switch to formula. But they each got a few months of mothers milk so thats better than none at all! It took me just one week to get back into my "regular" clothes with all 3 boys because of nursing! And I was so hungry all the time, I'd eat like a horse and still lose weight, it was wonderful.

All 3 boys were so very happy when nursing. When I had to give them formula, they all got colicky to one degree or another. Thats not a fun thing and its very very common with formula fed babies.

For the women who worry about sagging, well, its not from nursing! Its from the pregnancy every bit as much (or more!) Your breasts will be huge for 9 mos and if you dont nurse, they'll just shrink and voila (gravity sux!). Anyway, it isnt as bad as the damage to the tummy! But if those things are of major concern, save your money and visit a plastic surgeon once you're done having your kids. As far as feeling like they're a little parasite, once you carry a little one for 9 mos then give birth, you'll feel so very different - beleive me!

It is a personal choice. But nursing is definitely better both for mom and for baby.
