The 9-5 routine. Ending it for good.

Well, not exactly yet, but I am thinking about it. I am frankly tired, tired of the 9-5 routine. I want to live my life freely and work when I feel like it. My own business, my own destiny. Most people I know who have done this were usually layed off or fired or something from their current job. They couldnt find anything else and were forced to do their own thing. I sometimes anticipate for this but it never happens. The employers always want me when there is downsizing, restructuring, etc…Its like I am stuck here. The salary I have is way above average and its rare in Canada for the IT field/permanent position. Close assosicates say I would be crazy to leave such a position and some have been looking for years to find jobs with no luck especially during these economic times in this region. Its not very likely to get such a permanent position again here. Although in USA I would say its more likely. There is of course the fear and family pressure to maintain certain financial comfort. I am not a millionaire for which there would be no hesitation to make such a decision.

I want to hear from people who have taken the plunge. They said ‘screw it’ to the 9-5 routine and have started their own business. People for which it was a kind of a risk. Please share your experience.

I have been doing both (own business and 9-5 job) for many years. My primary job pays very well and business did very good end of last year and this year so far. I will eventually go full time with my business.

I don't do 9-5, but I work for a company where I'm free to work my own hours. I might do 9am to 11pm one day, and then 10am to 4 pm the next.

As long as I deliver the results, my managers don't care about when I work.

Maybe you're just not happy with the career you chose?

Either way, good luck.

From what i know own business and dystiny takes more time. In job its like 9-5 but in your own work its like countless sleep-less nights at least for the first stage of the business.

You see the world has not more regional boudries. The concept of global village has made everything possible. Sepecially in your field you must know there are endless opportunites and you are not longer restricted to regional boudried if you want to have a business in this pertucular sector.

A serious point to consdier before making such bold decisions. But do some reseach before you hopp into things. You have alot of places to get the research work and everything done in Canada or US. And may Allah [swt] give you success if you try s'thing of your own.

I think I spoke too much without any experiance. : )

Thanks everyone for your responses. Especially to stupid idiot for your kind detailed reply. I guess both types of careers have their pros and cons.

Asif, I remember you had some software you were marketing? has there been any recent progress which made you feel you should go full time?

I have a couple of products actually. One of them has become very famous and successfull in the State of Michigan. I get constant queries on it through references. It has been impossible to keep up with all the calls I have been receiving. All this has been through references and no advertisement whatsoever. I know that If I go full time, I can make it a big success. But I don't know if I am ready for going full time with it at this point in my life. My primary job is very well paying and I wanna raise enough money thru this part time business before going full time with the it. In addition, I am in the middle of moving to the State of Texas to avoid extreme winters in Michigan and to get closer to the family. The business will suffer because of this but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I made up my mind to make this move the day I landed on 13 inches of snow earlier this year in January when I came back from my vacation from Pakistan. I need some hands in promoting my products in different states. I will give a fair share from the money I earn. No one has shown any interest from GS anyway.

I have taken that plunge.

I would suggest that you save up some earnings so that when you do take the plunge you have enough money for atleast three months to pay bills with. Also make a plan for incase things dont workout, where you can work temporarily while you work on other ideas. It is risky. I started out doing one thing, and wasnt that successful in it, so moved onto something else. (My problem is raising capital so now I am looking into things that dont require me to invest it.) Then that didnt work out, so meanwhile I did some side-jobs/consultling to keep afloat. Now I am working on another idea and that is taking time, but I refuse to go back to the 9 to 5 routine for as long as I can stay away from it. As others have pointed out, you may have these hours or even longer, but its a lot more rewarding when you work for yourself, theres just no comparison to working for others. I find that with your own business, you tend to work a lot harder automatically. And usually you dont mind. Especially when you can give yourself vacations, etc. I know quite a few people who started their own businesses and most of them are successful Alhumdulillah. I am in a situation where I help support my family, so I need to work. I am glad I walked away from the 9 to 5 routine and working for others, I do not regret it, but I had to plan. smile

^Nice to hear your doing well munni. How long have you been on your own? What type of business are you involved in?

I guess with me, I am tried of traffic jams, bosses, deadlines, answering to others, meetings, etc.... I share your sentiments especially in the rewards part. It never bothered me to work hard, but I am tired of working hard for others.
