I have paid a price for my overly critical and sometimes judgmental thinking in the past, even when my intentions were not bad. I regret it.
I had a friend who used to smoke a lot. I used to bug him to quit smoking. I remember once he said,
*Ye kahan ki dosti he, bane hein dost naseh,
Koi charasaz hota, koi ghumgusar hota.
*
I'd rather be a charasaz, a ghumgusar or a helpful person than a naseh, especially when I know that now I have a pack of cigarettes stashed away in my cupboard. :-D
what about people expecting the same from those who give advice .. that is, they follow their own words too?? Is there anything wrong in such expectations.... no one wants to have their friends being Hypocrite, do they?
Dil kay phapolay jul uthay seenay kay daagh say
is ghar ko aag lug ga'ee ghar kay chiragh say
very good topic, Zobia.
poignant, how you made the point by the title you gave to people who take upon themselves to place their values on others.
the other side of it is, if people who are really thoughtful, and are not being nosy or invasive in the lives of others, then they may give advice, when asked for or when they absolutely must come in to save someone grief and sorry-ness for them being not aware of their own follies.
this can be done, in a non judgemental way, or in a manner that is polite, substantive and objective.
when relations are involved, being caring for each other is something no one, can detach oneself from. unless, someone is selfish and deceitful.
so there is alot to unpack, if the context is varied, for a self proclaimed individual who would like to tidy around other people's way of living and behaviors.
normally, imposing and down grading attitude that is all about taking away, is not something that is useable in the long run by the person who thinks that s/he can become that judgemental upon other people.

I hope that first Misra is right
This first misra is indeed right , the mentioned verse has been reported as a product of a young dehli’vi poet in history books and unfortunately no body knows his name thesedays . Mirza Rafi soda was also reported to be a part of that famous Musha’eera.
Well I have also read a different version of this particular verse . Muhammad Shams ul HAQ of Ghalib library Karachi wrote a book ‘*** Urdu ke zarb ul’misal Ashhar'*** after enormous amount of research .
And in his publication he has presented his version as :
Shola Bharak Utha meray is Dil kay Daag se Akhiar ko Aagh lag’gae , Ghar kay chirag se
And the aboved mentioned verse is attributed to a poet known as Mehtab raa’ay TabaN .
