Train blaze that sparked anti-Muslim riot was accident: judge NEW DELHI, March 3, 2006 (AFP) - A judicial panel probing a 2002 train fire blamed for sparking an anti-Muslim massacre in Gujarat state said the blaze was an accident, rejecting claims by right wing Hindus that it was deliberately set. The blaze sparked an orgy of revenge violence in Gujarat in which at least 2,000 people, mainly Muslims,were killed. Retired Supreme Court judge U.C. Banerjee said in his final report to state-owned Indian Railways that his four-member panel had concluded that “the cause of the fire in the S-6 carriage on February 22, 2002, carrying kar sevaks (Hindu pilgrims), was accidental and not deliberate,” Banerjee said.(Posted @ 19:00 PST)

this is old news...the conclusion of this report was already released 2 years ago.
in short, the banerjee report is considered to be a politically motivated joke. it was commissioned by none other than laloo prasad yadav and rushed to conclusion just in time for assembly elections when advisers had forewarned him that he desperately needed the muslim vote.
the nanavati commission is still carrying out investigations, but it will probably also be biased.

it’s no secret that muslims don’t believe the banerjee report either…but they’ll take exoneration over justification any day.
this report renders all the hundreds of muslim testimonies about rowdy kar sevaks harassing and abusing muslim vendors and a vendor’s daughter to be complete lies, and provides zero explanation for what a huge muslim mob was doing surrounding the train car or how in these circumstances the probability of an accidental fire taking place would be near zero…the height of all coincidences.
in all likelihood, the muslims were probably telling the truth and reacting to some abusive behavior by kar sevaks.

do you have any objection to what i said about the nature of the banerjee report? if not, then it should be obvious why so many people reject the “findings”. and what court and verdict are you talking about? this was an independent inquiry, not a court ruling.
oops, i guess responding would require actually knowing something about it and about indian politics instead of reading a dawn headline.

^ I need not read the report. I only know that a Bharati court itself came to the conclusion that the secular Bharat muslims were the victims of fundamentalist Bharati hindus.
