ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party has accused the media of blowing out of proportion the issue of drought and famine in Sindh’s Tharparkar district which it says is not something unusual for the region.
Faqir Mohammad Shah, PPP legislator from the drought-hit district, and Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Khurshid Ahmed Shah claimed on Sunday that the situation in the area was “fully under control”.
**Talking to Dawn, Mr Faqir said in a very casual manner that high number of death reported in his constituency was a “normal matter”. **He then gave figures for the past three years and said that 469 children under five years of age had died – 140 in 2010, 195 in 2011 and 134 in 2012 – because of various diseases and lack of medical facilities in the area.
**The death of 48 children in a little over two months this year, he said, was not something uncommon for the region. **
Leader of Opposition Khurshid Shah expressed similar views: “The situation is not as serious as being portrayed in the media.”
**He said wheat could not be distributed among the affected people because of financial constraints. He said wheat stocks were there but could not be distributed because the provincial food department had not released money for the purpose.
**
“Such incidents take place every year and there is nothing new about it. There is a possibility that the number of death this year may be a little higher than in previous years, but things are under control now,” Mr Shah said.
He claimed that the Sindhi media had been reporting the fatalities in Thar for about a month, but the authorities remained unmoved and sprang into action only after the issue was highlighted by the national media.
If the wheat stock was there and it could not be distributed due to shortage of funds, then how come Sindh Cultural Show was sanctioned billions of rupees?
I don’t know what is the real tragedy? The death of around 150 children or the statement that it’s normal?

The humanitarian crisis in the drought-stricken Tharparkar has caught everybody’s attention because of media efforts. It is hard to imagine the pain and suffering of those who have lost their loved ones. We are extremely saddened to hear about the loss of lives in Tharparkar. Our deepest and most heartfelt prayers go out to all those who have been affected by this unfortunate situation. The government of Pakistan has taken full notice, and it seems that efforts are ongoing to help those in need. We will continue to pray for those who have been affected, and sincerely hope to see the situation improve as soon as possible.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s seven official foreign visits in less than three months last year cost the national exchequer Rs168.1 million, official data reveals.
According to the record shared with the National Assembly by the Foreign Ministry, these visits had been undertaken between Sept 16 and Nov 30 last year.
The prime minister visited Turkey from Sept 16 to 18 and Rs4.6m was spent. He travelled to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly session from Sept 22 to 29 and Rs80.7m was spent, the most expensive of all visits undertaken by him so far during his current stint as the chief executive.
He was expecting to meet US President Barrack Obama on the sidelines of the UNGA, but it did not happen. He just could get a chance to shake hands with the US president at a dinner Mr Obama had hosted for the visiting world leaders.
Mr Sharif travelled to the US again from Oct 19 to 24 for a bilateral meeting with the US president. An amount of Rs35m was spent on the visit. Days after the visit, he went to the United Kingdom from Oct 29 to 31 to attend the ninth world Islamic Economic Forum. The cost of the visit was Rs25.1m.
The prime minister’s visit to Sri Lanka to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from Nov 14 to 17 cost Rs11.8m.
His three-day visit to Thailand for the Connect Asia Pacific Summit and bilateral meetings cost Rs9.7m.
The cost of his daylong visit to Afghanistan on Nov 30 was Rs1.2m.
In all, the prime minister has undertaken nine visits from July last year to Feb 15 this year.
An amount of Rs26.2m was incurred on his visit to China from July 3 to 8.
Most recently, he travelled to Turkey for a trilateral summit of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey from Feb 12 to 15. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is yet to receive details of the expenses.
In all, an amount of Rs194.3m was spent on his eight visits abroad, excluding the visit to Turkey.
