Thanking your manager or co-worker

for something they did for you which is their job. Is it required , good mannerism or if I forget to do so then will the be mad. I know will not be mad and will not even notice.
Examples:
I need to replace my old mobile phone which does not work anymore and by boss approved my request for replacement of this phone.
I need a report from my co-worker and she creates this job as part of her job.

Re: Thanking your manager or co-worker

While you may expect this to be their job, a thank you can act as an acknowledgement of their effort and output. It also helps strike a good balance to keep the relationship cordially formal as well as casually friendly... which is usually a good recipe for a healthy workplace environment.

Re: Thanking your manager or co-worker

I absolutely make an effort to thank a coworker or manager whenever they help me in anyways, whether its required by them according to the office policy or not. We in fact have a reward system where you can thank a co worker by issuing them a 25 points certificate. Each point equals one dollar and you can purchase discounted tickets, apparels or other merchandise through company store.

Re: Thanking your manager or co-worker

I always say "please" and "thank you" to both my staff and to my seniors for work they've done for me or assisted me with, regardless of whether it's part of their core job responsibilities. Courtesy and appreciation of another's efforts goes a long way to fostering a positive and cooperative work environment.

Re: Thanking your manager or co-worker

You can never go wrong by saying thank you. On the other hand, you risk hurting someone when you don't.

Re: Thanking your manager or co-worker

Since she went out of way to help me out , I thanked her and added this line.
You are such a doll.
Is this fine ? I guess it is because She responded by thanking me back this way:
You are welcome! :) Glad to help!

Re: Thanking your manager or co-worker

Unless I have a close and casual relationship with a co-worker I would NEVER refer to them as a doll - that's considered politically incorrect in the workplace.

Duly noted. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Thanking your manager or co-worker

Just a word on etiquette in the uk - as Sehrysh points out - never ever ever refer to someone like this (doll) - it will land you (most probably) in an industrial tribunal! I know thats the case in the EU, most probably similar in the USA and Aus etc, though Im not positive.

Alos the thank you and please issue in the UK - its a normal part of working practice, it is good manners - if you dont use them at the correct times, even in a colloquial way then you are in the minority, it could be seen as rude.

But balance yourself - dont overdo it. being too effusive in praise or gratitude is also considered unnecessary and you could embarrass the other person - Sensibilities come into it.

As a matter of interest the UK's BIS recently published a workplace study on manners - guess who came out in the bottom 5 of all nationalities in the manners survey - you guessed it : the pakistanis ( but then so did the bangladeshis). Indians were pretty high though which was nice! If i find it online again I will post it up for you .... if Im allowed to!
