graph 1: performance of kse index during the decade of democracy from 1990-99

graph 2: performance of kse index under musharraf i.e. from 2000 to about now.

so why should pakistanis be happy to see graph 2?

answer: govt of pakistan is the biggest owner of pakistani stocks. i would estimate that around 40% of market cap of kse is owned by the govt in the form of ownership stake in companies like ogdc, pso, national bank etc. under shaukat aziz’s reign, market cap of kse has risen from about $5bn to around $70bn which means that value of stocks owned by gop has gone up from around $2bn to around $30bn. essentially now, pak govt can pay off all its foreign currency debt by selling its ownership stake in pakistani companies. and this is exactly what the govt would be doing now if the ex-cj due to his jahaluth had not damaged the investment environment in pak.

shaukat aziz is the most successful corporate executive to come out of pak - sort of imran khan of the corporate world. all the bukwaas in the press against him is nothing more than display of jealousy and envy by dau takkay kay journalists whose only achievement in life would be to write for crap newspapers like dawn. criticism of shaukat aziz by in pak papers is like criticism of imran khan by tape-ball cricketers.

pakistanis complain that pak leaders are dishonest and incompetent. seeing the bukwaas spread against shaukat aziz, i realise why honest people would not want to associate with the govt. as a nation, i dont think we deserve anyone better than the likes of zardari and nawaz sharif.
