Bush, Manmohan send condolences after quake devastation

ISLAMABAD: US President George W Bush and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent condolences on Saturday after a powerful earthquake caused massive devastation across Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, leaving more than 1,800 dead.
“The president has been briefed and is aware of the earthquake and the terrible loss of life that it has caused,” Ken Lisaius, a White House spokesman, told reporters. “The thoughts and prayers of the president and the first lady (Laura Bush) are with the families, friends and loved ones of the victims,” the spokesman added. Singh telephoned President Musharraf and also expressed condolences for the earthquake victims in Pakistan. The Indian prime minister also offered assistance to Pakistan. Musharraf thanked the Indian Prime Minister for his kind sentiments, and also condoled with him on the tragic loss of lives from the earthquake, which hit parts of India as well. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice telephoned Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri and expressed deepest sympathy on the death and destruction caused by the earthquake. She offered all assistance to the Pakistani government in relief and rescue efforts. Rice also directed the US ambassador in Islamabad, Ryan Crocker, to immediately get in touch with the Pakistani government to ascertain the extent of damage and assistance required. afp/app

European countries offer aid to quake-hit South Asia BRUSSELS, Oct 8 (AFP) European countries responded swiftly to Saturday's massive earthquake that hit Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, offering aid and funds as well as condolences. The European Commission said up to three million euros (3.6 million dollars) could be approved within a day if requested by agencies working on the ground. A spokesman said the commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) was in touch with two organizations, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Netherlands and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) about the crisis. British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw for his part said, "we are offering help to the Pakistani government and are ready to respond to all requests." Overseas Development Minister Hillary Benn, calling the earthquake, "a major disaster," said British search and rescue teams were ready to fly out to the affected areas as soon as help is requested. In Berlin Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said Germany had immediately released 50,000 euros to be made available to Pakistani authorities through Berlin's embassy in Islamabad.Turkey also offered aid to Pakistan, Anatolia news agency reported, quoting Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul. Turkish civil defence and Red Crescent teams, experienced in working in earthquake zones, had been placed on alert. Greece also said it was ready to send a team of specialists to the region. Elsewhere, French President Jacques Chirac sent a message of support to his President Musharraf, his office said. US is sending 8 helicopters and 2 C-130s. This is the type of aid we really need. We have enough manpower. So these helicopters and planes will be of big help.
