^ Okay i see it this way, sure the prophet PBUH forgave his persecutors and so did his sahabah, however upon the passing of the prophet any apostates were slaughtered without mercy. The ruling of the day was simple, Allahs rasool was the only one who could forgive, the sahabah did not forgive apostates..... so why should we? And to this extent the current law is perfectly okay, no changes are nessacary only implementation should be correct.
