A few of us decided to head off to Thailand over Christmas break. We took the local minibus from Penang as I wanted to get a chance to see the countryside as well as “go local” for about eight hours each way. Our destination is Krabi in the Gulf of Thailand. This is the international mecca for climbers, and well as home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Less crowded than Phuket, and even cheaper its still a great bargain. Even in peak season, Bungalows on rustic Tonsai (“The Beach”) Beach can be gotten for 500 Baht ($15US per day). A days worth of climbing will run you about $25US, gear and guide included. You may rent a see kayak for $15US…or just laze around the beach in a sarong for free (Sarong will run you $3US).
There are three main beaches in Krabi, Railay Beach (The most popular…hence the most touristy…this is where all the pricey resorts are); Tonsai Beach(The more rustic beach…a favorite for the younger backpacker and climber crowd…this is THE BEACH…the one featured in the movie); Prah Nang Beach (This is the most beautiful of all the beaches…with Princess Cave as a backdrop). Ao Nang Beach is more towards town so does not have the feal of being on a Island…not recommended for stay, but if you need an ATM…this is where you will have to head to as there are not ATMs on either Railay, Tonsai, or Prah Nang.
One can walk from Prah Nang to Railay as they are on the same Island, but different sides, and to get to Tonsai, one can either take the boat from Railay ($0.5US) or if its daytime and your are the adventurous type…you may climb over the cliff path between Railay and Tonsai (not reccomended at night). From either Railay, Prah Nang, Tonsai to Ao Nang its the boat at ($1.5US).
I highly recommend Krabi over Phuket, as having visited both…Krabi still retains a bit of rusticness that Phuket has long since lost. Its also quite easy to catch a boat to Phi Phi or Sumai from here.
