Thai leader offers November poll

**Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva says he is ready to hold elections on 14 November to end a tense stand-off with opposition “red-shirt” protesters.**He said any election would be subject to certain conditions under his reconciliation “road map”.

The red-shirt supporters have been protesting in Bangkok since 14 March, paralysing parts of the Thai capital.

One protest leader told Reuters news agency they would seriously consider the reconciliation plan.

“We will talk about it and discuss his proposal seriously and decide what our position is. We cannot just reject or accept it immediately,” Jatuporn Prompan said.

The protesters accuse Mr Abhisit’s government of being illegitimate, and have been seeking new elections to be held within three months.

Violent confrontations between protesters and security forces since 14 March have led to the deaths of 27 people and injured nearly 1,000.

Mr Abhisit is under intense pressure to bring the protests to an end, as economic as well as human losses mount. This article is from the BBC News website. © British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
