Would you subject your fetus to tests like Amnio & CVS??? I am just curious in knowing what other desis have to say on this topic.
My belief is to leave everything in Allah’s hands.

Re: Tests during pregnancy
they're to test if you're baby has any defects, is that right?
Re: Tests during pregnancy
im not a mom nor am i pregnant. However...i would do the amnio if the baby is at high risk for birth defects.
To find out if the baby is high risk they do a small test. If you are high risk then u have the option to do the amnio.
I personally would want to do the amnio if I was high risk so that i can prepare myself mentally for whats ahead. Imagine looking forward to the birth of your child and you find out the child has birth defects. It's shocking. So why not give yourself a few months to prepare for it.
Re: Tests during pregnancy
I've always thought it best to know what to expect. When you're young, risks arent that high and many do not undergo the tests unless there is some family genetic history such as Thalessemia in which case most docs wound recommend having the tests done. Having worked for a Placental/Fetal pathologist, I've seen that there are some really terrible things that can go wrong. Imagine bearing a child for 9 months only to find that at birth, there isnt enough of a brain to support life. Or the baby is born with a genetic malady that ensures a short and painful life. Nope, I'd rather know.
Re: Tests during pregnancy
Thats sorta the same as saying.. Allah will provide you with money, but you don’t work nor do you look for a job..
You have the option of knowing.. there’s always the chance that the tests might turn out wrong n the baby will be safe and healthy when u deliver but i dont think its that big of an occurrence..
Btw, am i sensing good news? ![]()

^^^ Sara tumhari sense theek kaam nahi kar rahi isska ilaaj karwao kissi hakeem se:)
Khair the reason i asked the question was because with all these test the risk of a miscarriage is very high. Also, a friend of mine only had her AFP bloods done while pregnant and her levels came back high indicating that the child will have spina bifida and she denied further testing and the remaining of her pregnancy was spent in stress and the outcome was a perfectly healthy normal baby. They had her worry for no reason.
Re: Tests during pregnancy
^ Uff..
Of course prayer is the best thing to do, im not saying to not do that.. but when theres technology available that should help you, why not take (proper) advantage of it? I can understnad why ure apprehensive about those tests, i think anyone would be if the result could be a miscarriage.. Im sure when ppl have trouble concieving they try their hardest, look into all sorts of safe and halal methods.. i remember you got mad at me for saying that if u can’t have kids the natural way, then maybe its a sign from Allah that u shudn’t have children :p.. well this is sorta the same don’t ya think?
Re: Tests during pregnancy
Yes most of the time the tests come back with a false positive as did with my sister and it can be very stressful...
Re: Tests during pregnancy
Ms Mahru, when you say that the risk of miscarriage is "very high", the docs should be able to tell you the real stats. There is less than a 1 in 200 chance for miscarriage to have an amnio done. Amnio will tell you DEFINITELY whether there is a genetic problem (unless the test is done incorrectly - so go to a good doc for the test). As far as the AFP bloods, they can and do return false-positive results sometimes and the docs should also inform you of this and of the stats regarding what percentage of positive results turn out to be false. When the results are indicative of a problem, the pregnancy should be monitored with ultrasound and an amnio should be encouraged. This can prevent the nightmare that your friend went thru.
On a final note, my friend the placental pathologist has found that MOST of the time, if a miscarriage occurs after amnio or CVS, there were severe problems to begin with. OR the doc was really incompetent. But most of the time, it turns out that the baby wouldnt have lived anyway whether due to maternal problems or problems with the fetus.
hope this helps and hoping to hear good news from you!
Re: Tests during pregnancy
One other reason to do these tests is so that if there is a problem, you can prepare for it financially.
I am not sure about this, but there may be diseases/conditions that you can do the amnio for, and prevent or treat early on?
