Testing System ?

Among our three subject teachers one is unique in regards of his qualificatioins, teaching and presentation plus his way of testing his students.

His tests and quizes are open book, but still very little number of students scored high marks and some even did not qualify the mid term exame.

I personally like this way after returning from work to study , where i saw , where and how much was the use of formulas and proving those mathematical derivations.

Here with this teacher we donot need to memories long and complex formulas or memorising the proofs of long derivation but only need to make clear our concepts and know from where one question have been taken from?.

He teaches from some particular subjects books, he has given alll of his lecture notes/presantations.

But still his course delivering methodology is good and I like such type of teachings and teachers.

I just wonder , wether this type of testing system is adopted in other institutions also abroad or locally?
or not ?
or it depends on the level of studies as I am studying at postgraduate level i.e after my 16 years of education.

this is an imported method, that is mostly used in US and perhaps Canadian schools. Open book, open notes, cheat sheets etc in the exams. The idea is for students to more focus on the concept rather than rattafication of formulae, theorems etc. In such models, even when you've text books open in front of you during exam, it won't help directly to solve the problem. So if you understand whats being asked in the question, then you can get help from your notes/books about what formula, equation to use to solve the problem.

Understandable your point for me as he has studied his Phd studies from USA , may be he is applying that system to his students also.
